There are definitely people who have pets which aren't traditionally "pet" animals, chickens ducks geese horses sheep goats pigs
My coworkers from China all looked at me as if I were the village idiot, when I told them those two cute little dogs running around my kitchen were not for dinner.
It actually generated some incredulous disbelief on their part, with responses like, "well not
tonight, we understand... but eventually, right?"
"No, they're just our pets, we don't eat them."
"But when they get older...?"
"No, never."
"Well, we understand, not right now, but eventually...?"
"No, we don't eat dogs."
Later, I teased them about the rumor that you never find stray cats around Chinese restaurants, and they all looked offended. I apologized, thinking I'd crossed a line, until they explained that "we have nothing morally against eating cats, they just taste awful!"
