3016 rattling sound when key is on.

Hey OP,

My Max25 does the same thing. I always thought it was related to the glow plugs, like others have said. Doesn't sound anything like any kind of fuel pump that I've ever dealt with.

Glad to hear it's normal across the board. I'd not given it a single thought until reading this thread.

I agree, as I thought that the fuel pump would pump up, pressurize and then shut off until more pressure is needed.

It seems like there's enough of us out there that hear it, that it's not a problem.

OP....SE Mass eh? You're practically neighbors with Arrow and myself. Where did you get your tractor?

Westville Garage and Equipment Co. in Taunton. I've been doing tractor business with them for over 20 years. They've been in business and run by the same family (three generations now) for over 60 years. The wife of the founder still comes into work in the office. The grandsons do repair work.

They're nice people and have been selling/servicing Mahindras for about 8 years. Used to be a Deere dealer.

They've always treated me right.

We use a local dealer that has similar family history.... My family has been doing business with the Dubay family for about 33 years or so. Gotta love going somewhere that you're more than just a face in a crowd.

Always good to know of another local guy that treats their customers right. Thanks for the info!

I've gone to them about 15 years ago to straighten out a John Deere chainsaw. The husband was in his 70's I believe then. Mighty pleased that they are still with us..

The 'husband' was the founder, and he died a few years ago, but the 'wife' (grandmother) is still there working. She must be around 90. The place is owned and run by the daughter, who was working there when I first went there 20+ years ago. Her husband takes care of the sales and it looks like her son takes care of service. Nice family. Good business.

I had to go there today for some parts for my Fergie, and while I was there, I turned the key on a couple of 3016's they had in the yard..................same sound as mine.

So I guess I don't need to worry about it.

Not trying to beat a dead horse, but it is the glow plugs. It's much more noticeable on the 3016 I owned vs the 4010 I have.

How could it be the glow plugs? They are one piece (no moving parts) and the relay should be on or off unless your battery is dead enough that the relay is stuttering.
Its the fuel lift pump. Remove the deck, then stick your head underneath the tractor with the key on but the engine off and you will be able to trace the sound to the lift pump. Its used only on tractors where the fuel tank is lower than the engine to make sure the injection pump always has fuel.

Aaron fuel pump sounds usually equate to a pressure build or priming and then stop and everyone I've heard can be best described as an underlying "hum" as opposed to a couple of bb's jiggled in a thimble or the static noise electricity makes. A fuel pump or glow plug "relay" can click however. This sound never stops as long as the key is in the "on" or "glow plug" position just before the "start" position. These tractors do have a rather crumby battery in them from the factory that are prone to leak from the top plate but I do not know if they are so underpowered that they are effecting a relay. Any clicking or jiggling on these things seem to be coming from the relay when I did a sound check on mine and they all seem to make the sound.
