3016 rattling sound when key is on.

Aaron fuel pump sounds usually equate to a pressure build and then stop and everyone I've heard can be best described as an underlying "hum" as opposed to a couple of bb's jiggled in a thimble. This sound never stops as long as the key is in the "on" or "glow plug" position.
I've heard several diesel machines where the fuel pump/lift pump makes a clicking sound when the key is on.
I agree with aczlan. I sounds to me like it may be the lift pump.

This sound never stops as long as the key is in the "on" or "glow plug" position. These tractors do have a rather crumby battery in them from the factory that are prone to leak from the top plate but I do not know if they are so underpowered that they are effecting a relay. Any clicking or jiggling on these things seem to be coming from the relay when I did a sound check on mine.
In a car you would be correct (ie: the fuel pump brings the system up to pressure, then shuts off), but that is done by the ECU or a timer relay.
These tractors are setup differently though. On the BX2660 we have (for example), the pump is under the tractor (roughly under your feet) and it runs as long as the key is in on "on" making a rattling sound. As I understand it, it is a low pressure pump and is there just to provide a little positive pressure on the line going into the injection pump. I will try to shoot a video catching the sound later today if I have time.

Ok ,thanks Aaron. The key position that initiates the "clicking" is labeled "glow plugs". In the manual it states "this position activates the glow plug circuit. When glow plugs achieve correct temperature for engine starting, glow plug lamp will be turned off". The lamp does get turned off, however the clicking noise continues. The circuit for the fuel gage gets activated in this position as well. It states nothing about fuel system activation in this position but obviously there must be. There is no other sound such as a fuel pump priming noise such as my JD made and the "clicking" is coming from a point just under the glow plug harness on the right side of the engine. I cannot hear the sound with the engine running but that is not to say it is not making it. If it were as a result of a fuel pump system, the sound would be constant I'm thinking and it may be. Just can't hear such. Because of what the manual states, I'm inclined to think it as a "glow plug" relay originated but unless I see a schematic to see what else this circuitry activates, I cannot be cock sure. All I do know is that they all seem to make the sound so I have to assert it is a normalcy for these tractors. If I remember, I'll call the dealership today and if the service guy is there, perhaps he'll know exactly what makes this noise.

Ok I did contact the owner of the company. He is siding with the fuel pump as well because he states that the glow plug circuitry goes off when the lamp does. If that is the case, I shouldn't be hearing the "clicking" as I do now, of any electrical relay that coincides with the glow plug circuitry. The noise also emanates from where he said the pump is at the right side of the engine. In this case, the engine is lower than the tank which would perhaps argue against a pump of Azclan's description.. If indeed it is related to the fuel pump, I feel comfortable with leaving the key on for those few minutes you want to illuminate an area that has no other lighting such as my wood shed. Before, I thought I was frying an electrical relay and that I was overheating the glow plugs otherwise. Glad the op brought it up and it is indeed normal for these tractors and others in their line such as one of the Max's that have the same engine as the 3016.
