Backhoe 3320 and 448 backhoe

   / 3320 and 448 backhoe #21
The 448 and 485 are the same hoe, the thumb can't weight that much more. I have a 36" bucket on mine and have no issues. What's your pressure relief set at? If it were me I'd be on the dealer to fix the issue. If you look at JD parts site you'll see the parts are all the same with exception to the dipper with the thumb mount. There are also different mounting plates for the cabbed tractors. My dealer says the mounting plates can be installed on the 448 to make it cab compatible. Deere's site actually had a video of a 4720 cabbed with 448 hoe before they released the 485. I'd be happy to take a video of mine, to prove there's no magic to it.

Matt,
It's possible that my rock shaft arms hit the stop before the BH reaches its home position. I probably can adjust them further, I'll take a look. I'm not really in love with using the stabilizer arms AND the rock shaft to put the hoe on as I have to change the hoses from one system to the other.

I've read elsewhere here that you can do damage if you set your rock shaft arms for too much travel. What I need to do is find the maximum point before that happens, I think then I could use the rock shaft system like you do. I'll look in my owner's manual.

It's not as if using the rockshaft is out of design. It's one of the reasons I went with the Deere hoe over the Woods. So when your rockshaft lifts the hoe does it stop on limit or go to relief bypass? When it goes to relief there should be an aduible whine and the engine will strain slightly(at idle). When I bought my 448 the dealer did the install and added the PB to my machine. I know they needed to adjust the relief since the tech mentioned that they seem to come from Deere set low. But he said nothing about the rockshaft linkage. I also noticed no difference in lift height with implements. As far as hard stops go I can move my rockshaft arms about 2" (by hand) above where it needs to stop for the pins on the hoe. So I wouldn't be too concerned with that. I just can't believe all the hoe owners that are content with the stabilizer route.
