3720 cab vs open air

I understand the argument for a basic 6 foot bushhog in the 3000 series but I don't get the focus on the MX6 or medium duty bushhogs. So many people I know just cut grass with their hogs, or if they need to clear brush, after the initial brush clearing to create pasture, any hog with 1" capacity is fine. The MX6 seems like more weight, cutting capacity and expense than most people need on an ongoing basis.

Gotcha.....if I were buying a RC, I'd get the SQ172 @ 764lbs. But that does make sense.
Still..if I had access to a MX6 to test, I'd like to try it...just to say...

My MX6 will be here prior to my tractor. I will test it for you if you want...

I doubt anything with it will be an issue other than picking the whole RC up and traveling any distance. At 5mph plus with the RC in the air, any bump could be its last, before you flop.:confused2:

I think a lot of people like to buy deere equipment? and some want the best?

I do a ton of cutting around our farm fields and I never know what I might come accross. People throw things in the worst spots, so I want a cutter that will be bullet proof. I have tore up our cheaper cutters ina few seasons and I like the reliability of the medium duty cutter. If it was just for maintaining the field behind my house, it would be way overkill!

While I understand the need for a mine clearing mower, if I were to buy a green one (Still prefer the Bush Hog one I mentioned earlier...best blend of performance/heavy duty/cost) it would be the Frontier 2072, I'd say that would be right at home behind any of the 3x20's....and for most of us, more then enough cutter.
I guess I just dont understand where in the marketplace the MX6 fits...yeah it sells, but why?....because its better then your neighbors? Any mower that tough in that size really makes me scratch my head. If I had that much mowing/that large of brush to mow, I'd go grab the Batwing and 100+ horseys...

You may be right Dave, I'll have a better sense when my tractor comes in. I do know that the 2720 ran the Woods 60 cutter without any problems but this is much lighter than the MX stuff and the 3x20 series is about 1000 lbs heavier than the 2 series.

I have never looked at the Frontier 2072. I have seen the SQ1072 that you speak of. IIRC, its not dual layer constuction like the MX5-6. I cut small sections around fields and ditches and I do not stop if there is a branch down in front of me. I make mulch...LOL...

The MX-5 fell in my lap for a great price when I bought the 3720, and my dealer is trading in my MX-5 and giving me a brand new MX-6 for 250.00 dollars. Why look at anything else with that deal?

Plus, a larger tractor would have a hard time not running over the crops in the field. I can usually not do any damage to the crops with smaller tractors.

I'd like to know what it is that people are running over to tear up their light-duty bushhogs. In 30 years my dad went through exactly two basic 5 foot bushhogs of the King Kutter variety. As a boy I'd hear him out there bushhogging, sometimes making a huge racket as he ran over something large. The worst outcome of this was an occasional shorn shearbolt. In the 3 years since his death we have never even blown a shearbolt with the 3320 / 5 footer King Kutter and that's with three different people doing the mowing.

The best I can sum this up based on my family's experience is that a 6 footer sure would have been nice, but not a stronger gearbox or thicker endplate.

MSmud,

Either have we but I guess some folks take these things in the woods to trail blaze or something. All we ever do is our overgrown fields. We hit a rock once and a while but not much happens.

WOW Great feedback.. I searched on the JD site for the overall height of the 3720 with cab, Does anyone have that measurment? My shelter is exactly 8 feet tall. Hope that is tall enough.

From JD brochure:

3x20 height with cab and R1 tires is 89.4"
4x20 heigth with cab and R1 tires is 95.4"

R4 tires will be a little shorter with both.

We run an MX6 on our 3720 and it handels it perfectly fine. I actually am glad since when on hills the extra width helps with stability and when doing loader work it helps with ballast. I've mowed some steep inclines with the MX6 and the fact that it sticks out so far helps a lot when i need to mow stuff to steep to back into. These hills in the pictures i just recently mowed were steep but backing up and down them made it posible to mow the whole thing. IMHO, I too believe that the 3720 can pull and or run 6' implements. In some cases, yeah, an MX5 would be a better choice but the MX6 works for our needs. cab wise, I've never heard of anyone who said they wished they hadnt gotten a cab because those who do have them love them.

I had the measurements but threw them away

The measurements will vary depending on which tire you have (Ag, R4's, Turf). You should be able to get this information from a John Deere dealer, that's where I got them.

The measurements will be the same on a 3320, 3520, or 3720.
