3ph auger hp recommendations

As a general rule, I know that you should need about 5 hp per foot of brush hog width. What is the formula for a 3ph auger? I am considering either a 24 or 36".

Is this a post-hole auger? That's mighty big for posts, even for construction. You must be planting trees or something. For this big of a drillbit, I would only consider a hydraulic gearmotor to drive it. WHEN it hits a tree root and slides down under it and wedges, you will have to dig it out. If you could reverse the hydraulic flow and back the drill out of the obstruction, it would work. good luck.

Hmmm. That makes sense. I will be using it for landscaping, and now that you mention it, all of the ones I have seen for this porpose are hydraulic.

I've never seen one in those sizes for compact tractors. Bobcats have hydraulic drive units and perhaps if you have enough hydraulic flow on your tractor you could use the QA on your FEL to drop the bucket and attach a Bobcat QA auger. But for the most part, skidsteers seem to have a lot more hydraulic flow than many compact tractors.

Jethro, my boss otherwise known as DW, or the Colonel, runs a landscape business.

We have a NH 1925 about 34hp. We run a Rhino phd (big one but forget the model) and an 18" auger normally.

We keep a good supply of shear bolts in the box on the tractor.

We dig two, three and four holes and dig between them by hand when we want big holes.

We have a line on a 24" with phd but have not picked it up yet.

The amazing thing to me is when you watch a dingo spin a 36". I believe they can do it because of the hydraulics and they can control speed etc better.
