I'm looking at a tractor which has a 3PH cap of 1635lbs. Also looking at another which has a 3PH cap of 2650lbs. My question is what will I be able to do with the extra 1,000lbs of lifting capacity that I couldn't do with the other?
Thanks

Well, not knowing what horsepower tractors you are looking at but there are a few 3pt attachments that can get very heavy where that added weight could be very important. Normal finish mowing, box blading, blading, tilling shouldn't cause a problem as these attachments generally arent over 1600 pounds. Some of the heavy duty rotary cutters can get around that weight or heaviers and there are some other attachments that may get above that 1600 pound weight, but not knowing what pto horsepower your dealing with, I couldn't say for certain. Many of the much more knowledgable members may be able to help you a little more.

Sorry Patrick, I can't resist . . . seems pretty obvious to me, you could lift an extra 1000#! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Just be careful you're comparing apples to apples. Most 3pt hitches are rated for the lift capacity "24 inches behind the hitch balls". However, occasionally you'll see a hitch number for the rating right at the end of the hitch arms - which is much higher of course.

The tractors have about the same HP - 33 - 35. PTO HP of 27.

don't forget leverage. A rotary cutter will put weight on the 3 point than a boxblade of the same weight, because it hangs back so far...

Don't the big round hay bales get up to 1500 lbs or so? Would the weight of one of them, plus the bale spear or fork be pushing the margin on the weaker 3PH? That might be something the stronger lift can do that the weaker one can't....

I ask mostly for my own edification--I'm no expert.

Pallets and bales may be where you can use it, or leveraged weight on a heavy boom.

Another thougt about this, it probably means you'll need some extra weight on the front if you use that extra 1000 pounds of lift on the back.

Yeah, I would certainly hope that the tractor with the 1000# greater lift capacity is a heavier overall machine or has some type of front weights or ballast. preferably just a heavier overall machine.
