3point log splitter

I think I would rather wear out a stand alone engine, instead of putting many hours on my expensive tractor. I have been thinking about this alot lately also. this leaves the tractor free to carry logs or split wood back and forth without having to change things out.

Agreed. I thought about it too since the cost of a 3pt was less than half the stand-alone I was looking at. In the end, I like just hooking up the splitter to my ATV and hauling it around to piles I've cut for firewood. The tractor can be used for other things.

TSC will sell anything that they can get their hands on. They don't stand behind the stuff they sell. I bought a Champion (chinese) 22 ton from TSC and the hydraulic lines rotted and blew out in less than a year. TSC said that's not their problem and would not do anything for me. The Champion repair depot where I live don't have parts and couldn't get them, as well that part wasn't covered. (I wonder what is) Bottom line is stay away from TSC if you expect after sale support.

This is a problem with most "big box" stores, we have Fleet Farm around here and they sell some good stuff and some junk and they don't have much in the way of parts to repair either their good stuff or their junk. We have a stand alone splitter from Fleet Farm I think it is a Speeco but it isn't the 35 ton its the 22 or 25 or whatever size the lower one is, I have yet to find a block of wood it won't split from twisted elm to crotch pieces of oak and maple it snorts a little and pops it apart. I won't have a splitter on my tractor, I use the tractor to haul the wood, I pull the splitter with a 4 wheeler and set it next to the wood pile, I then park the tractor with the bucket raised next to the splitter so as I split I pile the split pieces on the bucket, stacked as high as possible without if falling over I then drive the tractor over to the wood door of the basement or my piling location outside and pile it. This way I only have to handle the wood 1 time before burning. I find it much handier than having the tractor tied up. Also a friend built a splitter for his NH 30hp tractor and grass grows faster than that thing splits, a pto pump would be a must have on a 3pt unit unless you are ok with the slow speed.

Depends on your needs! I don't use my 3-pt splitter a lot, but when I need it, it's available. No, it's not fast, but I work alone & by the time I stack the splits, it's back up ready for the next stroke. As for hours on the tractor, I bought my 790 with less than 400 hours & I normally put about 100 hour/year on it. Don't think I'm going to wear it out! ~~ grnspot

Every one needs or wants is different! We here that a lot on here, lol! But it's the truth, a lot if the time we buy one style of something and wind up wishing we got something else cause when we get a few hours of use on it, we figure out hey, this isn't working out like I thought! Anyway, hour use splitting wood on your tractor will be, well not a whole lot, it's a tractor, there made to work. I've got a old poulan splitter that you couldn't get anything closer to the ground with she lays almost flat which is handy for the big blocks' last year the old Briggs finally swarmed and I debated on putting her on a three point and plumbing it up to the tractor! Wound up buying a honda clone. My reason for not plumbing her up to the tractor was, I don't only cut wood on my property at home, now I've got the means of hauling my tractor, but it's easier to load the ranger and splitter up to go cut on other properties! At home my wife usually helps me and we have both on the woods, which when I cut wood I like having both the ranger and tractor out there! LUTT

I bought a TSC hydraulic wood splitter maybe five years ago and it has been just fine. I built a bench/table to support the splitter. The table is large enough so that I can stock pile wood to split and move the rounds easily onto the splitter. The table holds the splitter so I just drive up the tractor and attach the hydraulic hoses. The hoses are just long enough so that I can have the box blade on the tractor and still connect to the splitter. This way I can use the tractor if I need to by just disconnecting the hoses.

My usage of the tractor was front loaded in the first few years of ownership. I don't put very many hours on the tractor anymore and running the tractor to power the wood splitter might add 60 hours a year to the engine. The tractor is just shy of 900 hours in 13 years with most of those hours put on the engine in the first four years of ownership. The engine should be good for 3,000 hours. I don't think I will be splitting wood in 50 years. The SpeedCo model I bought was about 1/3 -1/2 the price of a powered splitter. I did not want to spend the money and maintain yet another engine.

Flip side is that I have not used the splitter in two years since I have been splitting wood by hand with a Fiskar splitting ax. I can split most wood far faster with the Fiskar than I can with the Speedco.

Later,
Dan

I have a log splitter which is probably 20 yrs. old that was driven with a B&S 5hp engine. It would split logs ok, but if you crowded it, it would kill the engine. I figured probably the pump just wasn't enough to handle the bigger logs. So, I set it up to run directly off of my 3pt. and rear remotes. I had the cylinder seal replaced because it leaked. I used the original valve on the splitter to run the ram in and out. WOW! This thing will split just about anything I put in it, and I usually only run the tractor at around 1000rpm. Its as fast or slow as I want it to go. I don't use it that often, because I only burn wood for campfires. I made a homemade small trailer for it. When I get to where I want to set it, I turn it around and hook it up to the 3pt. I did this so that I could move it around by hand or with my 4 wheeler if needed. No more having to treat the gas when its sitting idle, or stored for the winter. The gas ones are OK too, I just don't use it very much, and have a lot less to maintain that way!...:tractor:
