3pt Broadcast Spreaders

So I am getting started with my ten acre place here in Hutto. My landscape buddy tells me that I need to get started with all sorts of solids. Herbicides and fertilizers. So, a fertilizer spreader is in order.

I'm looking around the internet at broadcast spreaders and feel a bit overwhelmed. $400 at Agrisupply $500 at TSC $750 at the John Deer dealer, $550 at www.everythingattachements. I just don't know where the "best buy" is.

So, if any of you would take time to offer an opinion on 3pt spreaders, I would appreciate it. I am not opposed to spending for good equipment and firmly believe that at best, you pay for what you get.

Let me know what brand/model you think would be the Consumer Reports "BEST BUY"

Welcome to TBN.

We have a BEFCO 209-121 that works very well on back of our Kubota B2710. It not cheapest but, very well made. We always wash it out well after spreading fertilizer and Levi in sun to dry well. So far, no rust.

Hey,
Thanks for the link. Befco, Cosmo, these things look alike in photos. I'm wondering if the Befco has a cast gear box or pressed metal gear box? The guy at Everything Attachments made a big deal about that component in their two online videos. Looking for more opinions!

BTW, there is a used Befco available in the Houston area on Craigslist if anyone is interested. Too far a drive for me I believe!

I have had several in different countries over the last few decades. Never had any trouble with any of them. As you have been told, wash it out well after every use, dry in the sun/wind - you will not use it on wet days. Then the ubiquitous WD40 sprayed lightly over every visible surface usually keeps things OK until the next time you use it. Take off the pto shaft every now and again and give it the WD40 treatment also. If I had a choice, I would choose a plastic rather than a metal hopper, but I do not consider it an "essential".
