3pt chipper will not lay flat

I am sorry for being such a nube, but I wanted to ask why my wallenstein 3pt chipper will not lay flat when I put it down from the up position. I tried adjusting top link, and that makes it a little better, but still has an angle to it. I will take a picture if need be and post it up over the weekend. Thank you.

set it on the ground and level it with top bar,, when you pick it up it will not be level because the bottom will push out and the top will pull in toward the tractor.. but when you set it back down then it will be level on the ground only.. Lou

Yes it does. The PTO shaft has to be cut to use on the tractor. Otherwise, you can jam
the two halves of the shaft and covers together. Everything Attachments on their website
has a good video on how to measure and cut the PTO shafts to fit..

I believe DMW knows this and that he was asking the OP about his setup.

There are, of course, different lengths of top-link bars, so you choose one with the range that you need.

I have a Wallenstein BX42. Mine does not go down all the way either. Note, however, while it is not in earth contact it can be adjusted LEVEL.

In my opinion Wallenstein's are designed this way so when mounted as rear ballast operators will not plow with the chipper when tractor is in reverse.

This Wallenstein peculiarity should be explained in the operator's manual but it is not mentioned.

First, lock tractor brakes "on" and lower FEL all the way to the ground, then put a 4" - 5" diameter ROUND branch under the support stand, in middle or slightly biased to the rear, and chip away. I have been carrying around my "favorite" 5" chunk of branch since the Wallenstein was new. Do not use a 4X4 timber or anything not ROUND.

If you add a longer top link the chipper will reach the ground but not be level. FOR SAFETY IT MUST BE LEVEL BEFORE YOU ENGAGE PTO.

You guys are really good, I will use the round trick, because I already shortened the shaft just to be able to hook it up. It's not a giant problem, but in the videos and manual they stress that it has to be even. So thank you for all your responses.

I have a BX42S that I just purchased new in January. I could not get the links low enough to connect until I rotated the sway chain links to allow more play in my lower arms. I am over six feet tall. There are holes in the bottom of the skids on the chipper. One COULD place a 4X4 piece of lumber under each skid aligned one along the left skid, and one along the right skid. Add a few lag bolts and you have a chipper modified to meet a personal input chute height requirement. Oh, and I don't have to dismount my tractor to get my favorite little stick. Just FYI. It worked for me.

I have a BX42 on a JD 4120 and it doesn't reach the ground either. I have to set it on a pallet to remove it from the tractor. Why do you say to set it something round when chipping?

I was planning on welding on some permanent skid extensions (2 x 4 sq. tube) to solve the problem. I thought my tractor was just too big for th BX42 and didn't realize others had the same problem...

I like the skid idea if you don't mind the machine being raised slightly.

Or, perhaps you could move the hitch pins on the chipper to where you want them.

I recently purchased aBX62R and encountered the leveling problem,so I installed a hydraulic top link.Now the chipper sits level and the vibrations are greatly reduced.The unit is mounted on aJD 5105M and turns at 540rpm at 1750 engine rpm in the pto e mode.The hydraulic feed is definitely the way to go-my helper snagged his glove on a feeding branch and I disengaged the feed drive before it could pull him in.I never operate this beast alone;my position is always at the feed control bar.

No issues with the BX-42 on my Kubota B2920. I have to tighten/shorten the top link to drive on/off my trailer without dragging the back of the chipper, but once out in the woods, I loosen/lengthen the top link and can always get the chipper flat on the ground. No problems attaching or detaching from the three-point either, though I do store it on a pallet to keep it off the ground.

This morning used the Wallenstein BX42 to mulch a Flatwoods Plum along the Nature Coast State Trail.

Note my "favorite" branch under the chipper base. It is nothing fancy.

I think you just need to buy a shorter toplink at tractor supply. The chipper has a long base that extends pretty far out from the lift arms.
