Thinking about getting a splitter for the tractor. What should I be looking for in one? I know a lot of guys will say you wont want the hours added to the tractor but I'm not that concerned about it, i do about 100/yr or so. I've looked at the one tractor supply carries and most of the reviews are good on it. But I want to make sure that there's not a better option out there.

Just my opinion, but there is only one that I would buy after lots of research and first hand inspections of quality, design and ease of function............timberwolf tw 3HD

I just did all the same research and liked the Wallistein 3ph units but ended up with a gas powered Areins 22 ton. The Areins uses the same piston , pump, and Subaru engine as the Wallistein and my local hardware and repair shop cares them so I liked that.

I have the Timberwolf TW3HD and I like it. Very, very capable splitter. I use it on an M5040.

I only run the engine about 15-1700 rpm. Even at that, it uses a fair amount of fuel. At those RPMs, the cycle time is fairly slow, but then since I'm doing the work by myself, the cycle time is fine for me. If I had some helpers, I'd run it faster.

It definitely needs a moderate sized tractor. I one time hooked it up to my B2710. When the ram hit the retract stop, it immediately stalled the tractor! Not enough engine to handle the splitter.

Prior to the Timberwolf, I had a gas powered splitter. It did a decent job but took a lot more effort to start (LOL) and gave me maintenance hassles.

I once built a 3pt splitter and used a PTO pump, 21gpm. It worked great and was quick. Used it on a Kubota B2910. Wanted to avoid the slowness of running it on tractor hydraulics.

How much is the three point log splitter and how many tons is it? I'm about to buy the Troy Bilt 27 ton gas log splitter at Lowes for $1,400 with the Honda engine. My brother has this splitter and it's easy to start and does a great job. What I like the most about it is that I can pull it to where the log is, cut it up, split it there and keep the mess out in the woods, then haul the split wood back.

If I had a splitter on the back of my tractor, I think I would hate hooking it up. I keep my mower attached to my tractor most of the time and dealing with changing implements would just add a lot more work to the whole process of cutting firewood.

Only one brand to look at IMHO, Wallenstein. Bought a WX310 when we bought the 1523, has served us well. Well built (Mennonites) and not grossly overpriced either. http://www.embmfg.com/Forestry/Splitters/ We added removeable feet, 2 at the front, 1 at the rear. for when the wood is huge, another great idea of my father.

Nice looking splitter !! The PTO pump is also a good idea. I always thought if the gas engine quit on a typical splitter, I would run it off of a tractor's pump. But that would require a larger tractor to get ~20 GPM. The separate pump gives you good flow at a decent pressure. I probably could run it off of my little tractors that use less fuel.

Not true, the one i posted in the link about was spec'd at 10gpm, ran well in 6, rubs even better on 12.

Was a tad slower on the 6, but still faster than using an axe.

Niw if you want to soend $60,000 on a bigger tractor, that coukd be the excuse. 😄

The Prince pumps can put out 21 GPM at only 32 HP at the PTO per the attached. The pressure is only 2000 psi, but that should be decent enough in my opinion.

That looks ideal. Are they very pricey?

The Prince pumps run $500 to $600 new. Somewhere I have one laying around. Finding it is another story.

I have the 13 ton from Powerhorse/Northern... Made in the USA and It is well worth the money.... I would buy it all over again...

Regards,
Chris

I assumed the Powerhorse ones were Chinese, no? Who makes the engine for them on the gas models? looks Chinese. I tend to be partial to Honda.

I went trough all the same thoughts before buying my splitter! Gas powered, stand alone, or 3PH mount. After about 4 mos of study, I opted for a stand alone Honda powered Wallenstein. I couldn't be happier. I can tow it with my lawn tractor or with my B3200 to the site of the fallen tree on my property, cut and split the wood there in the woods, load the wood in the bucket of my Kubota at waist height directly off the splitter and then drive it back to the woodshed for dry storage. I split 5-6 chords this past week or two before dusk after work quite easily. Fast, efficient, let the machines do the work. It would be too long of a walk carrying the wood from the splitter to the bucket if my splitter was on the 3PH. Of course a wagon/trailer could make it easier! My Wallenstein is my new, valued member of our family!

My understanding is the Powerhorse splitters are assembled in the US of primarily imported parts. I have the 3 point 13 ton unit and my impression is that the quality is pretty good. I think all the Powerhorse engines are made in China and I've heard mixed reviews on them. I have a PowerHorse chainsaw that I bought because they were closing them out really cheap. I was a little worried about it but I've been using it for several years and it works fine.

Don't want to get off the subject but I have the same splitter. I split about 6 cord a year and my neighbor does a cord for his hunting cabin. The only issue I had in the 10 years I've owned it is the insert between the couplers that connect the engine to the pump wore out. It started rattling like crazy. I replace both steel couplers and the insert (got them through Fastenall) for less than $20.
