What sort of termite protection do the log homes offer?

   / 3R Home and Barn Project #132
When I was looking for a new home my log house concern wasn't termites so much as carpenter bees. I had those bastages in the old deck and they're a buggar to deal with!

Rob, you should have plenty of activity keeping the logs maintained. But it sure does look nice!

They use the typical termite shields between the foundation and subfloor. Note that the logs stack on a traditional subfloor, not directly on the foundation...

A standard practice is to use at least an 18" foundation above grade. This is done not only for termite prevention, but also to keep the logs up above splashing water, and keep them dryer and cleaner...

A few manufacturers offer borate pressure-treated logs. Most people just mix borate or other type of insect repellent in the exterior stain. As noted, carpenter bees are the more common problem, not termites...

In dry California, with the high foundation that Rob has, I wouldn't anticipate any problems with termites...

I'm glad you answered that question Kent, because I didn't know the answer to it. Same if someone were to ask me that question if I was building a non log home...I dunno? The contractor would know that, right?
I figure to be dead before it's eaten up by termites or what not. What did the old guys do when they built log cabins in the frontier days? lol ... I don't have a clue about it.

Rob
I just though of it you could put those web cameras in bird houses on your post and they would look natural.

LOL;)

BTY the build looks great

:) It's only because I've researched the heck out log homes, since I plan on building one as my retirement home...

BTW, my comments refer to what's called "milled or manufactured" logs, not those that are handcrafted with each log being totally different from the next...

Kent,
I think that's what mine are too. They are milled and manufactured logs. I'll bring my 0 to 12 mics out to check them.:) They are already looking for an excuse to NOT have me there because they know I am a toolmaker.

OAN, I got confirmation today that ship date is going to be September 20th. That means they will arrive Saturday September 22nd. They will start laying the first course on the following Monday. ... yikes! lol ... I am so excited I could pee!
Loretta is going to get vacation so we can spend a week up there to watch them. They said it would take about 2-ス weeks because of the height. Then they will start putting on the metal roof. They are also submitting the engineering for the barn this week and should get a permit within a week for that. That will be exciting too.
Things are really moving now.
These are the only photos we took on our last trip up.

tommu, tommu, tommu...jeez...:)
OK, I'll see what I can do. At least Loretta will take some videos of them placing those trusses?

Oh, and this one.
Wes has already found a good place to plink squirrels and rabbits from under the patio decks, above the rocks, down to the meadow below. He is nuts like tommu.:D

I'd be having a chat with Wes. Maybe suggest he do his plinking away from the house. Unless, of course, you don't like watching wildlife from your deck...

   / 3R Home and Barn Project #140
No kidding... Constant plinking from the deck will mean no wildlife near the house. Not because it's all killed off, but simply because it is no longer a safe environment to live in. Animals know this stuff, too... (And how often do you want the wife/girls finding dead squirrels and birds laying around?) Tell Wes to find a good tree further away from the house.
