Ford or Dodge? (no I will not even think about a Chevy)
I have a 2001 quad cab with a 318 and it is a great truck but the kids are getting bigger so I am thinking about moving on.
Ford is a true crew cab so that means more room for the kids in the back
Dodge and the dodge dealer have been very good to me and I “think” I could get a better price and trade in with the dodge
Any pros or cons on one truck or the other?

Chucko, I've had a GMC Dmax for 3 years now and love it. A lot quieter than the other 2. Onstar is great, back seat has lots of room. Not a single problem in 3+ years.

I know GMC is a kin to Chevy, so sorry if I offened you /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Had a van a few years back that the trans screwed up in
dealer repaced it with another bad one
Chevy would do nothing to help not even approve another dealer to fix/look at it
this thing was still under warnittee and no chevy dealer would do anything
The lady at chevy corp even knew it was wrong
I asked for a chevy service rep to just look and see what he thought...I was told the reps were for the dealers not customers
They will NEVER get another $ from me

I don't down the GM's because I know you can get a bad one in anything. It is all about how they deal with the bad when it happens

I'm on my 3rd dodge diesel, They just keep getting better !! I really use 'em........see pic..........The latest is an 04.5 with the H/O cummins........My kids (now 7 & 8) love the 4 doors. It's a real horse and the new ones are MUCH quieter than the older ones. Like it alot so far..........Tom

Recently shopped around for a truck. Tried to keep an open mind. Drove Dodge Quad and Ford Crew, both ran well and rode nice but seemed like the Ford handles better (does not steer as hard). Ended up with a Ford SuperCrew. Just could not justify the extra expense for a diesel. I have driven Fords most of my life, so I can't say that I was totally unbiased.

Chucko,
With the options available today, based on what you seem to be looking for, I would offer that the Dodge would be my first choice. I have had a number of them since ’95 and would say that my current ’02 is the best. ¾ ton, long bed, extended cab, 4x4, 6 speed manual with the SLT package works well for us. It certainly handles everything we have thrown at it and has never missed a beat. I understand that the newer ones have more HP and are quieter. The Cummins has been bullet proof and has a lot of torque.

To be fair I looked at both the Ford and Chevy as well. In the Chevy I like the Allison transmission but don’t think the interiors are as big or as well put together. The Fords seem to do everything pretty well. I suspect that if the Dodge did not have the Cummins I would buy the Ford.

Best of luck.

My dad just brought a chevy 4 door 3/4 ton diesel pickup and I agree there is very little in the back. on the outher hand my friends 1 ton powerstoke has a lots more room. I ride the back all the time with plenty of room. I am not a small person either being 6' 4'' so it is big in the back.
Joe

P.S. there is alot out there for diesel profomance. the 1 ton can light them up on take off. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I don't think you can beat Ford as the all-around winner. It has the Navistar Powerstroke, the torqshift 5 speed transmission with tow/haul, huge brakes, the most room of any of the big three in the cab, and a great frame. Plus with all the new toys on the 05's Dodge and Chevy don't even come close to matching what Ford has to offer if you are planning on towing anything. I like Dodge looks alot. I think the frame is great, and the cummins is unbeatable. Dodge really falls short in my opinion by offering only a 4 speed auto that is basically for a gas engine, no tow/haul mode. Why dodge did not step up with a real automatic diesel transmission I have no clue. I also don't like the brakes on the Dodges. And if interior room is important to you the Dodge gets an F on trying to be a crewcab everywhere but the drivers seat. The backseats are ok but are nothing compared to Ford or Chevy for room or comfort. Chevy, well personally when I have a choice between cummins and navistar over an isuzu I'll take the cummins or navistar any day of the week.

Doc- have you gotten an '05 yet? My F350 CC 4x4 SRW LWB is due in tomorrow. Can't wait to try the integrated brake controller out. I've got the 6.0 in an '04 Excursion and it's great.
