I got a quote for a Massey 1754 and it is about 10K more than an comparable LS or Mahindra. Are the Massey tractors that much better? They are even higher than most of the mainstream tractors.

Massey is "mainstream" in that they have been around for a long time. And they are just as good but no better than any of the other "top" seven or eight brands that are discussed here all the time.

Actually, it is perfect PowerTrac 422 or 425 work. Articulating tractors are going to be more efficient than a traditional CUT in smaller areas and doing tasks that don't involve significant ground engagement. The idea of having your implements front mounted is also a major plus. And, the tractor and implements will store in a much smaller area and be easier to mount.

MossRoad is being shy today. Look at his videos (click his signature).

I've hit my quota on conversions this year.... ;)

4tillingdirt: one thing this thread has shown is there is seldom a single right answer but maybe a slighter better answer at times. First thing you need to do is make a list of what you want to do. The find out the equipment you need to do the work. As has been pointed out have an idea of the time you will be able to give to the job versus what the speed will cost you in bigger equipment and tractor. That will direct you to the tractor that makes the most sense for YOU.

I have three tractors a 27 and 68 hp Kubotas and a JD of about 91 or maybe a little larger. For my use there is nothing the JD can do the 68 hp Kubota can not also do. I use the same disk and field cultivator with both. But the JD does both a good bit faster or with lower engine speed in higher gear in the same time frame with less engine wear. So neither is a bad decision, but I sure do like the extra power when needed over having to down shift or lift an implement.

Early on, many years ago and having my L3400, I was only wishing for more HP when running PTO equipment like a 6' bushhog.

But now having a MX5100, I find myself wishing for more power on alot of tow stuff.

Example, Pulling a JD210 transport disc. I would like to be able to pull this at 5-6 MPH for ideal soil mixing and leveling. However, with the HST and medium range, thats a no-go. So I live with ~3.7MPH in Low. Same with pulling the 3-12 plow. Low range only.

And just yesterday, towing the 7x12 dump trailer hauling an old manure pile home from ~3/4 mile away, Loaded up the HST didnt like High range that well. Especially on the few sight hills.

These are examples that were mentioned earlier in this thread about not being able to go in a higher gear. I had plenty of traction. Just didnt have the power to maintain the speed I wanted to.

Just wish kubota would make a HST in a bit bigger machine. ~60 hp seems to be the limit. An Ideal tractor would be a ~70HP machine, with the taller (smoother riding) 20 or 24" fronts, but still in a sub-5000# machine.

And still remain sub-5000# machine? I don't think many people would want to pay the price it would take build a frame with the steel alloys that it would take to keep the tractor from distorting it's frame work or tearing itself apart.

Not sure why you say that. Its been being done for years. 70hp, 5000#....plenty of them out there and they aint made of exotic alloy and they dont distort their frame.

Just not any offered in a HST.
