Well, Grant, its mainly fantasy at the moment, but the thoughts are primarily motivated by my frustration at my backhoe choices on the 2910. I cant use a subframe model because they interfere with my belly mower. I dont like the 3ph model because they are so difficult to take on and off. (I already take my FEL and belly mower off and on every week. I dont like the idea of an even bigger chore to get the hoe on and off.) That's what's been motivating many of my recent posts on hoes and more perfect tractors.
It seems that the JD hoe is much easier to take on and off. It also seems that the JD FEL is somewhat easier.
I like the 2910 a lot, but I could use a slightly bigger tractor for my brushcutting and dirt engaging work. So that brings up the issue of 3010/3420 vs. 4300/4400. The hoe (and FEL) attachment issue drives me toward JD. Then I notice that the JD FEL and hoe both have significantly higher lifting power than the Kubotas. More hydraulic pump pressure. The JD also seems roomier and more comfortable.
Admittedly, I have not yet driven a JD 4000 or manipulated the attachments or timed an actual backhoe attachment. I plan to next week.
Again, mainly fantasy for me, which I probably cant afford anyway. In your situation, I think you have to decide on the tractor size first. The 2910 is noticeably smaller and lighter than the 3010/4300, and if you want that size I dont really think the JD offerings (4100 and 790) are competitive.

Have you ever tried out a rear-mounted finish mower? It seems like switching from a mid-mount to the rear-mount would allow you to get the subframe model hoe, and also be a little easier overall if you have a need to pull the mower off very often. I even leave my mower on as ballast when using my FEL as long as I'm not working in really tight quarters.
If you ever want to check out a rear-mounted mower (on a B2410) you are welcome to come to my place and demo it. I am pretty happy with the Woods unit.
Most importantly though, I need to do my best to keep you from going over to the <font color=green>green side</font color=green>/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.

Yes, I have thought about the possibility of a 3ph mower. It would allow me to use a subframe hoe. Woodbury Tractor even has a nice used 72" used Woods rear mower. But I'm not sure I would like finish mowing around all my trees and bushes with it. That was the reason I originally chose belly over rear. Plus, it seems that I would then be sacrificing my most frequent job, finish mowing, on the altar of occasional backhoe use.
The JD hoe seems much easier to attach/detach than either the 3ph or the Woods frame mount hoes, plus it allows you to keep the belly mower on the tractor and even use it when the hoe is attached--as it has been explained here, at least.

I am about to become a 4300 owner... after much research I have decided on the JD. The 4300 with 430 FEL w/73" bucket, 47 Backhoe w/13" bucket, 4wd, Turf tires, Hydro trans, tall rops, Mid PTO, Dual SCV, rockshaft w/telescoping links, and Power Beyond $25,800 + tax. Dealer KC Canary Fultonville, NY... Best Salesperson I have run into of all Mark Bruckner... very helpful... very patient... I'm a buyer!

crowlej, you're buying a very nice tractor. Why did you decide on the 73" bucket rather than the 61"?

Actually the dealer suggested it... according to him the FEL has the power to use the add'l size and it's real handy with snow removal.
I'm not sure if I'm too late to help, but I purchased a JD4300 HST 4WD with: folding ROPS, Industrial Tires (loaded), 430 loader (with large bucket), 48 backhoe with 18" bucket for $25,000 . If I didn't choose the backhoe, he would have sold it to me for $5,700 less. It was from a dealer in Nothern PA.
