460 loader is being \"jerky\"

My 460 loader is starting to act weird. I used it the last few days to move snow, and while lifting a bucketful, it seems to jerk on the way up. I've checked the rear end fluid, and its perfect, also I'm running the engine at 2000 rpm, but its still acting funny. Is this due to the cold weather? It was 10 degrees here, but im sure some of you have used them in much colder weather. Any help is most welcome.....

Re: 460 loader is being \"jerky\"

My 4710/460 does this on the first startup of the day. After warmup it works fine. the jerking was very bad when the tractor was new. Now after about 185 hours I seldom notice it. Dealer thought the problem was air in the system. They could not find anyother problems.

My 4610/460 does just like chevy's. When I first start up, it's a little jerky but after warming up it seems to work just fine.

Re: 460 loader is being \"jerky\"

I've seen mine do it - even after the tractor is warm but if I haven't really been using the loader. Only seems to take one full cycle and it's gone. Doesn't seem to be a problem, though I'm curious what causes it. It does seem that my loader is getting 'better' i.e. leakdown is less than it was new. Maybe I'm just getting used to some of it but I think these things take a little breaking in.

I did an experiment today. It was 20 degrees outside, let the engine warm up, went and used the loader. Loader did its jerk thing, so I raised it all the way up, and all the way down, stop to stop, and same with the bucket, and problem went away. I dont know what that means, but at this point the oil was cold, but worked normal after I raised it up and down. Maybe air in it?

Perhaps we should all stretch our loaders before working out. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I'm going to try the full cycle after mine warms-up manana. I've noticed a little slop in the cycling when setting out as well.

Re: 460 loader is being \"jerky\"

Last think you want to do is pull a loader hamstring lifting that load of gravel! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If this is sop on the 460's - I'd like to hear from someone expert on hydraulics what causes it - and if it can be eliminated. Like I said - so far doesn't seem to be a big deal - but if there is something simple like periodically bleeding some air from some point in the system - that can solve it, well even better.

Re: 460 loader is being \"jerky\"

Most likely the problem is that there is a small amount of fluid that is draining for the valve, lines, etc. It takes a minute to purge the air for the lines, before all is well. It would be more noticeable when it is cold, because of the hesitance of the thicker cold fluid to flow.

Re: 460 loader is being \"jerky\"

My 4600/460 Loader Combination has the same situation. When I first lift the loader (to get the bucket off the 2x4's I have on the floor), it sometimes jerks. If I run up the RPMs and get it warm first before lifting the bucket, it doesn't do it. After this first time raising the bucket up and down, the problem goes away. This seems to be pretty standard - no matter the temperature - and it doesn't seem to be a problem for the unit overall so I've not paid much more attention to it.

I'd be curious to hear what an expert says on it though.. thanks!

It sounds like enough of us have the symptom that we probably don't have to worry about it. Mine behaves better after a bit of a revving as well.
