can you help me understand the biggest difference between the 4710 and the 4210?

Assuming 4210 is better for mowing and 4710 better for working. Is the gap significant on either of those?

thanks

The gap is pretty big. You're talking half again as big of a tractor 20 plus more hp, more hydraulic flow, just all in all that 4710 will be twice the tractor of the 4210. For the price difference no doubt I would go the 4710 route.

in your opinion is the 4710 gonna do a decent job mowing?

You could buy a good used garden tractor or an OK new lawn tractor for less than the cost of the MMM by itself. If you are going with the 4710 you might want to consider that. Even if you went the MMM route on the 4710 there would probably be plenty of areas you couldn't get into that you would need a lawn tractor or push mower to do.

That sounds like a good deal on the 4710. That is what I would get with something else to do the finish mowing and a 3pt rotary cutter to do the rough mowing (fields, brush etc).

ebeb ... if you have finish lawns that you like the looks of, and don't have obstacles to mow closely around (as in low trees, decks, intrusions, pavers, siding, small beds, etc.) the 4710, in my opinion is far too large.

Now if you have 4 or more acres of long clear runs of lush grasses leading from a mcmansion, then the 4710 might make sense. This machine would handle those 9 blade bat wing rear finish mowers on a golf course quite nicely. If that's what your lookin to do, then have at it.

In my opinion, the 4710 crosses the line between a CUT and an UT (as in utility tractor). People are using these with mini-balers for hay making ...

... the 4210 is a CUT, almost a small one at that ...

Read the specs ... look at their HP (both engine and PTO) tire sizes and weights and you'll will be able to visualize to some extent the difference.... again ... another analogy: think of a Mazda Miata and a Corvette ...

ebeb

If you can buy a good used 4710 for 15K, you can't go wrong. That price would be about 5 to 6,000 off the price of a new one (that is if you got a good deal on a new one). After you buy it and decided it was too big, I guarantee you can at least get your money back but probably more.

I don't know about your soil condition but I mow with a JD 4610, which is the same tractor except the 4710 has about 4 more horsepower. Attached is a pic of my yard, mowed with the 4610 and a Landpride RFM.

The 460 FEL will set you back about 3,500 or so but never priced an MMM.

No matter what I do I will have to push mow the small area directly around the house (surrounded by long walk to front door, driveway island, etc). outside of that we are talking 5-6 acres of big open spaces (mostly on a long hill/slope).

I am not worried about getting by trees/etc, that wont be an issue at all as land has sporadically placed 40 foot maples that aren't a mowing issue to any sizable degree.

I am worried about looking out at big tire tracks, but most of what I am doing is on this long hill that stays dry.

keep the thots coming. Again, I want a machine that will do great work for me and be a good enough mower. 4710 and 4210 are two options, I will gladly listen to others

Thanks a ton for the help!!

The 4710 will do as good a job or better than the 4210 with a mmm. The only problem you will have is getting around alot of trees if you have them.

If you have the turf tires you won't have a problem. If you have the r-4's or r-1's and it's wet at all they may leave a little track. I have the r-4's and mow alot of pasture with it. If it's wet you can see where I went. But when it's dry you don't see the tracks at all.
