can you educate me on the wheel options and what is the best to accomodate traction to get work done as well as leave minimal tracks when mowing

I looked at the 4310 vs 4610 for much the same reason you are. When signing day came I purchased the even larger 4710 (almost a 110) and have been very glad I went with the larger tractor (still wish for the 110). The extra weight of the tractor seems to be a benefit while using the backhoe. Having trouble the the hoe now but before it would make the 4710 dance. I know the extra PTO HP has been a blessing for the rotary mower. I have also moved larger trees in one bite (have the 4-in-1 bucket) that would have taken several trips with a smaller tractor. Also felt like I needed the larger tractor-loader combo to get the most out of the 4-in-1 bucket. Have moved pallets of landscaping blocks (with forks attached) ect...

I guess I'm partial to the larger machine - rather have more power and not need it than to have less power and run the be-gezzzzes out of it - also will last longer.

my 2 cents

Basically you have three tire types, R1, R3, and R4 The turf tire, R3 is like you see on lawn mowers. It is not aggresive at all and when it spins it usually doesn't leave much of a mark. The next step up would be the R-4 tire. The R-4 tire is an in between tire. It has bar tread but they are placed in a minimally aggressive pattern. The bars also are moderate height. The R-1's are your ag tires. They are placed in a very aggressive position to allow maximum traction. The bars are also longer and so they leave much more of an imprint that the turf or r-4's.

As far as what is best. That is a tough question. If you're mowing your house lawn turf's are going to be best for that. But for other work you are going to want some traction. As a combination I would go with the R-4's. You will get some decent traction and not leave marks if the ground isn't wet. You will really have to be careful mowing when wet though.

The 4710 is by far the best tractor out of the bunch here and will do a fine job mowing like others have said. If you get the really wide Goodyear or Titan turfs for it, it will not leave a mark. We run turfs on our 970 and 990 which is about the same chassis size as the 4710 and they leave no mark. The 72'' mid mount mower on the 970 does one heck of a job. You would get a nice green painted one through Deere and that deck has been around for a very long time. Very durable and well made.

I have a 4710 with R4 tires, 460 FEL and ballasted in the back with about 1200 lbs. When it's wet, I can make some pretty good ruts in the clay we have around here. But don't let that stop you. It's a great tractor - especially with the hydro transmission. I took the loader off the other day to work with a landscape rake in and around some pretty thick trees. Without the loader, it turns and handles great. I don't have a MMM, but if you had one, you could get around trees pretty well with it. I don't know what turf tires would do to the equation. From what I've seen, they are much wider, and may inhibit the turning radius and agility.

One thing to consider is its height. The larger frame puts you up in the air more - making problems with low branches. I had to go around and trim all the low branches on my property before I could get around very well under trees. And I still have more to do. On 14 acres of pretty dense trees, that's a lot of work.

Hope that helps.

J.

Thank you all for the help here. I guess now I will go see what I can get the best deal on.

One question I have is some help on dimensions. Can someone give me length of the 4710 vs the 4210 vs the 2210? (and the 4310 if you have it). Trying to see how it will do in the 4 car garage until I get a shed built.

I know I can find wheelbaseon the deere site, but only have wheelbase (is that from outside of tire to outside of tire, side to side?)

wheelbase (width)
2210=57"
4210=65"
4310=68"
4710=71.5"

what about length?

In my experience turf tires are good for turf, not much else. my 2210 came "accidentally" equiped with something called HDAP tires from an X- series. It's too bad this tread isn't more widely available as it seems a great all-around tire. You mentioned plowing snow, I would not even attempt to move snow with turf tires.

I have the 4000 TEN brochure right here so you're in luck. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Here are the lengths:

4210=117 in.*
4310=117 in.*
4710=128 in.*

*Overrall length is from 3-point hitch in level position to front bumper. Subtract 7.6 in. for tractors without 3-point hitch.

Hope this helps. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm not sure, how do you mean "outside to outside?" Wheelbase is measured from the point at which the front wheel touches the ground to the point where the back wheel touches the ground. I hope I was able to explain that so that it is understandable. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
