This might be dismissed as silly, but why don't you buy a heavy duty garden (not lawn) tractor like a Cub Cadet or John Deere? We mow about 4 acres with a Cub Cadet. You can get tillers, snow blowers, blades, etc for them. And a Cub or Deere H.D. garden tractor will mow the lawn faster than a small diesel tractor because the turning radius is much tighter. As for mowing the pasture, a garden tractor will tame a pasture and turn it into a lawn (we proved that first hand with 2 of our fields). 2.5 acres is not a large piece of land, the little Jinma you are looking at will likely pull a 48" or 54" finish mower, a Cub or Deere garden tractor will have a mid mount 54" or 60" deck. So in additon to getting faster turns, you get greater cutting width too.

I think it might be cheaper to buy the Jinma that a good Cub Cadet or J.Deere garden tractor, but not a lot cheaper. And you will get good dealer support with the Cub or JD. My Cub is about 11 years old and going strong, I have other larger tractors, but I also have 12 acres and lots of other things I do. But for the first 4 years I lived in the country I did everything you are talking about doing, and a few other things, with only a garden tractor.

Not silly at all, makes good sense.

My concern with the larger garden tractors is they make great mowers but are not so good at the other stuff.....particularly pushing snow.

For example, my father bought a nice White's tractor with a snow blade. It never worked worth a ****. Kinda put me off that whole idea....not to mention they cost as much.

Another issue for me, and another strike against powertrac, is no diesel engine. I like the torque and power of diesel...not to mention the fuel economy although that is not such a big deal with a tractor.

Finally, I would like to eventually build a pond dam and develop a wetlands septic system on the property. Having a machine capable of using an FEL and box blade in the future is a big plus.

I could go small now and trade/sell to get bigger later. Just not sure I want to do so.

Plus I just want a tractor.....not a 1/2 a tractor. My father in law used to have a small Kubota 4WD that was surely no more than 11HP. I LOVED mowing and blading the gravel drive with it. Doesn't make economic sense but it is a driving force behind my quest. Why just settle for a mower?

But all good things for me to consider.

At this time I've made a deal for a nice Snapper rider to get me through the summer mowing....plus I don't really want to use a tractor around the house. Come Fall maybe I will have made up my mind.

Great input guys!!!

PT does offer a few diesel versions, the 30, 45 and 60 series are diesel. May be a bit big for just lawn mowing, but they do offer diesel.

A couple more thoughts, first, a real heavy duty garden tractor is not a 1/2 tractor, it is a heavily built small tractor with about a 20hp engine and it is capable of far more than you might think. Second, if you are concerned about snow, then get a front mount snow blower. I have a front mount 54" snow blower on my Cub Cadet and a rear mount 60" snow blower on my New Holland TC24D. The Cub will clear my driveway faster that the larger NH. Granted, the Cub would probably do a lousy job with a blade pushing snow compared to the NH, but with a front mount blower it is actually faster.

I own a piece of White equipment, and White and Cub Cadet are both owned by the same parent company, but there is no way you can compare a White lawn tractor (even if it is the same hp) to a Cub garden tractor. They are different machines. Everything is heavier on the Cubs, even the new ones. The drive lines are completely different. Etc.

As for mowing the lawn, something you will spend most of your tractoring time doing, a Cub or JD garden series tractor (not the light weight lawn models from Lowes or Home Depot) will simply cut faster than an 18, 20, or even 25 hp compact tractor. In fact, it will save you a considerable amount of time if you have any landscaping at all. The more you landscape around your yard, the harder it is to use the larger tractors for mowing, especially if you use a rear mower.

As for the other projects you outlined, those are "one time" big events and you will accomplish those much faster with a MUCH LARGER piece of equipment than you are considering buying. In fact, you might want to consider renting a 40+hp TLB for a day or two to do the big projects versus the weeks it would take you to do those things with a 18/20/25hp compact tractor (assuming you do add the FEL to it at a later date).

Now for the final point, you said you want a REAL tractor. OK, now we are talking MAN talk here and I can understand that. . . EVERYTHING I WROTE ABOVE is logical and really makes sence, a good heavy duty garden tractor will do what you want and do a great job and save you time. BUT IF YOU WANT A REAL TRACTOR then you need to realize several things. First, it doesn't necessarily make sence. I have a Cub Cadet. I have a NH TC24D. I have a Kubota B2910. I have, at various times, various antique Oliver farm tractors. To be totally honest, I could get by with the Cub Cadet on 12 acres! The B2910 is a good size tractor, way to big for mowing, especially since it has a FEL and BH. The NH TC24D is about the perfect compramise machine, and would mow 95% of my lot IF it had a mid-mount mower. . . but I got a 3pt mower on it because I didn't want to mow 95% of my lot with it. As small as it is, it is too big to work up close to the shrubs, flower beds, etc that my wife has planted all over with the tight curves and radiuses she designed. I use the B2910 for construction of things. I use the TC24D for maintainence. I use the big antique Olivers to pull kids around in wagons or to scare the bejeezus out of city folks who think they know how to drive anything . . . put them on something that takes a 1/2 acre to make a turn and aim them at a tree line if you really want to have some fun!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Based on your DESIRE for a real tractor, and your NEED for something a lot less, I would strongly suggest you look at a Sub-Compact Diesel. Massey's GC2300 or Kubota's BX22/23s or New Hollands brand new TZ series. They are not cheap, but they are all REAL tractors, and they will be MUCH MORE practical than what you are considering buying. With their HST transmissions, dealer support, and wide range of implements you will actually be getting a good practical tractor. Then, when you have your one time major project, go rent a large piece of equipment that is designed for that type of work.

JUST MY 2 BITS.

Keep in mind that while 4wd is nice.. 2wd tractors have been viable largly from the thirties to the mid 60's nothing to sneeze at.

Besides.. sounds like the guy is on a budget.. and he only has a bit of land to care for.. not the 'big ponderosa'..

I just can't see dumping 3+grand into a lawnmower.. and not even a comercail one at that.. like a ztr.. which start around 4k for the cheapies.

If the guy is doing brush mowing.. even with a heavy duty lawnmower.. it is going to beat it up... Plus.. the pto and 3pt of a small tractor give him hundreds of options.. whereas the lawnmoew has few.. and they few it has are weak sister options... I've seen a 20hp jinma pull a car at a homier show.... lawnmower aint gonna do that..
just my .02

Even the big 3900 dollar lawnmowers with 25 hp engines just don't compair to a tractor.. For one.. they lack the weight to use that 25 hp.. ( and we all know that 25 hp is right befor ethe engine detonates.. etc )

My 8n was cheaper than the top of the line craftsman lawnmower... I can tote a 5' rotary cutter or 6' finish mower with it... pull a stuck vehicle out of a ditch, etc... and run 18mph down the road in it carrying a trailer of hay.. Sure.. the lawnmoer probably gets higher marks in 2 areas.. cut finish, and lawn printing.... That said.. I'd take the tractor..

At a certain level its a Tim Taylor thing.......MORE POWER!!! <insert grunts here>

LOL!

I know 2.5 acres ain't a whole lot.....I intend to acquire some of the remaining 35 acres of pasture around me eventually or, failing that, move up to a larger acreage and build.

For me, resale is a bit of a concern along with longevity and versatility. I'm not looking for a gold course manicure so a $3K mower is not in the cards.

I just made a deal on a nice little snapper rider for around the house. I have an older one that has some problems but is basically the same so between the two I should be able to keep one running well.

The tractor is for the fun, for rough cutting the field and for mowing out beyond the immediate area of the house. It is also for grading the gravel drive to the shop, toting materials and pushing snow.

My thoughts right now are to get a small 18-22 HP 4WD (for FEL later) in 3 cyl. with turf tires. I'll add a rear blade and a mower to that. If I can get in new for $6K or less in the fall....well we will just have to see.

I've looked at the grey market reconditioned tractors and that is a tempting alternative.....particularly the Yanmars which appear to have a good reputation and wide parts availability and dealer network. But they are used, don't have english warnings, don't have ROPS and usually don't have live PTO. So I'm not too tempted.
