Re: 5 PTO Tiller for 25HP Tractor. 19HP to PTO

I've used a 5' tiller on a 22 hp Yanmar (mechanical PTO without a separate clutch). No problem at all, even when grinding up my gravel driveway. I found out that the knife style and condition are the big players in how it works. I even used it when backing up to attack the ground (Tail Gate all the way up.)

I second the vote for a tiller wider than your tractor. Otherwise the next round slants the tilled soil. As long as you can raise it up, you will be fine. Maybe not want to use top gear, the best ground up soil comes from multiple passes at a crawling speed. I did my 5 acre hay field a few years ago. Took ALL weekend to finish, but worth it.

I still have the tiller (its a Yanmar) but my latest tractor is about 18 inches wider than it. Results are OK but not like before. I'm thinking of hooking it up to my JD F935 as a front tiller. I have the 3:1 reduction gearbox from a useless front snowblower (Plow is SO MUCH BETTER), so this rube project ought to work. I need a round Tuit to get this done, though.

Re: 5 PTO Tiller for 25HP Tractor. 19HP to PTO

I have a 35hp with 29 at the pto. Brand new so I know it has full power. I use a 5’ tiller in heavy clay soils and have a hard time keeping my rpm up without going REALLY slow. Sure you can try it - but why waste the time, find yourself a 4’ (and you may struggle with that in clay soils)

Sure would be nice to cover the tires - but first, be sure you can power the implement. Those who say you can do it probably aren’t dealing with clay.

Some tillers are permanently offset or adjustable offset to cover at least one of the rear tires. This requires traveling in the same direction for subsequent passes but is usually not an issue. The advantage, of course, is that a smaller tiller can be used while leaving no tire tracks.

The tiller can be offset with the 3PH lower link arms also if needed to cover a tire track. Just don't want to offset so much to put the PTO in a bind.

I do run a 5' KK tiller on the Kubota B9200 which is rated at 22.5 engine ponies but do have to limit the depth for at least a couple passes in tough conditions.

Edit: Forgot to mention that a hydrostat transmission on the tractor works very well when tilling as ground speed can be easily varied for tough conditions. I didn't read all the above posts so sorry if repeating something.

The NH TZ25DA is a SubCompact Tractor. It is 46'wide, so a 48" tiller makes a lot more sense in terms of traction, hp to run it, weight on the 3pt, etc. I would say wait until you can find a 48" tiller.

Another thought is you can remove a row or two of tines to reduce the horsepower requirement for a given width tiller. Removing them from one side creates, in effect, an offset tiller.

There's a perfect example of beating the crap out of the "soil structure" of your garden soil...

SR
What structure? It's about been beaten into sand

Thanks for the info guys! I have seen a bunch of 4’ tillers out of state for around $1,000 which is around my budget but find nothing here. I found a 42” offset Land Pride tiller that some guy is selling. He is asking $1,200 for it. I have seen plenty of 42” tillers going for the $700-900 range, and I know brand matters. Is $1,200 a good deal for that tiller? It looks in decent condition but I would want it for $900. I don’t need anything too of the line.. just need to turn some dirt/clay. A 42” offset might be more manageable for my tractor, right? See attached for pictures!
