I think I can stick with the $100 4.5 in grinders before i go after the $300 Metabo. Want one for sure, but not dedicated to always needing the best.

ACME TOOL has a 5" Metabo @ 10A for $129. and they have Milwaukee 5 inch with 11 amp and a 13A Milwaukee paddle switch both for $109

They show a wide selection of grinders (and prices) :)

I don't do much heavy metal grinding mostly cut off, wire brush or sanding disc so I only ever owned a tiny 4 inch Makita model 9514B (4.6 amps) plus a slightly larger Craftsman Industrial disc grinder 4.5" @5.5A and that one feels almost twice as heavy as the Makita so I just weighed them both. :D

The Craftsman was 5.9 lb with disc, guard and handle and the Makita was only 3.3 lbs with cut off wheel and handle sans guard. That Makita has metric spindle thread too. The cordless Milwaukee I have can take a 5inch disc.

I have a Black and Decker "Firestorm" 8.5 amp 4.5" angle grinder. Got it 6ish(?) years ago and its been great.

The best grinder I ever seen for really leaning on is the Black & Decker Wild Cat. I understand DeWalt has taken over the name now. Still not a bad grinder. Far has the 4 1/2" grinder I don't give them much thought. I use them until the smoke gets loose, then buy another one.

I have several grinders, including a Wildcat,

it's a brute of a grinder that looks and acts like it will last forever!! I've never seen one worn out!

For smaller grinders, I have two old Milwaukee's and although they have been good, sometimes the on/off paddle switch will stick!

OK, if we are voting here-----this is my choice.

Makita 9005, 5".

I have 2, both yard sale finds and still performing really good after about 10 years of often abuse.
They are really built like a truck, nice balance between weight, power and durability.
One is outfitted with cutting discs and the other is used with wire brush and/or sanding discs.

The trick I find is air blowing clean after every day's usage, that and tightening screws from time to time.
I also like to open the 'gear box' and re-distributing the lubricant as it gets flung about leaving the gear train somewhat dry.
As with everything, maintenance is the key.

If I recall I paid about $25 ea. with leads or plugs damaged.
A very common damage is a pulled inner wire lead in the power cord and folks tend to toss rather than repair.
If not tool repair savy, current shop repair rates leads most folks to replace with new.

Also must add that I like the quality of power line cord Makita uses as well as their generous lengths.
In cold weather the cords do not become fishing rods and I like that length.

If you do lots of heavy grinding, Metabo grinders will last longer because they have a slip clutch in them to prevent severe over loading. Fein is another top of the line grinder. Makita 9005B grinders were pretty much the beginning of the heavier duty 5" grinder but the older ones held up better than the new ones. In 7" most grinders hold up pretty good as long as you don't intentionally try to stall them.
