5 dangerous things you should let your kids do

I always left a loaded 22lr rifle next to the back slider with a brick of ammo. The kids, shot it until they got bored, I drove into them gun safety, The youngest son, got marksman in the first day on the Airforce range. Kind of like I did during basic training 30+ years before. It gives us something else in common.

Blow things up with M-80's.

When I was a kid back in the 60's -70's firecrackers had some oomph! One black cat could send a soup can 50' in the air. You let one of them blow off in your hand - you had trouble.

Then bring out the big boys. The c bombs and silver salutes! We had our own miniature quarry going! Blast time. Keep on excavating that hole.

Today's firecrackers won't knock over a paper cup. Not to mention you get caught with the big ones - hope they don't really think you might be a terrorist.

Just don't let them go to the corner store for some Skittles and iced tea.

Let them experience Success and Failure. Schools that try and isolate kids from failure are just making it harder to adjust to the real world outside of school. The real world has winners and losers, the sooner they learn that, the more likely they will realize that they need to work to not be a loser.

6. Express your ideas/opinions (conditions permitting). This is a skill that needs to be developed and managed. Nobody enjoys a persone who tells you exactly what they are thinking all the time. On the other hand, an individual often needs to express themselves honestly to be taken seriously by their peers. Ideas can be the most dangerous things a person can mess around with.

Let me expand on that to say express yourself TACTFULLY. There is way too much rudeness in the world today.

Yes - tact is a skill I wish I could use more often than hollerin'. They both get results, just different results.

Part of the tact/rudeness thing is due to not listening. It took me a long time to understand that sometimes, people give you very valuable advice, and you can do yourself (and them) a huge disservice by not acknowledging and considering it, even if it doesn't change you mind.

#9 Learn to use and maintain an axe.

We push our 6yo pretty hard sometimes, but he has done quite a bit.
When i was 6yo I was running around Berlin (before wall fell) unchecked lol.
He is about to turn 7 and he has gained a blue belt in taekwondo/hapkido
broken a board
Sparred with people twice his size
Got his first gun and shot it (.22 marlin)
Helped rebuild a motorcycle
Used tools and knives
Rode a horse,an elephant and a camel.
Played with an 8ft python

And lots more that I can't think of.
I bought him his first car when he was a year old.
In a couple more years we'll start restoring it('48 chrysler that has been in family since picked up in detroit!)
He's going to a braves game in Atlanta in a month with pawpaw.

I didn't mention he did all this with clubfeet,no toes and barely any fingers.
My kid's awesome!
An old man told me once the trick to kids and why grandparents are always the best is because they don't say no.
If the kid always gets told no,they just quit asking.
I follow this advice daily, and simply counsel the accidents and mistakes.

Opinions are good. But if you want people to respect you (especially those with opposing viewpoints) You must be able to back yourself up with facts. If you really want respect though, you must also listen to the other side; and be willing to bend and accomodate their opinions.

Disclaimer; I sure do wish I,d figured the above out about 53 years ago. ;)
