5 dangerous things you should let your kids do

/ 5 dangerous things you should let your kids do #21
I had done pretty much all of them before 10 (too poor to have my own pocket knife) my older brother probably would have snagged it anyhow. the Spear Throwing maybe not so much see older brother comment, I got to retrieve said spear after the thing missed my head, which was a skill I learned quick how to dodge things flying at my head. still have a couple scars where I wasn't quite fast enough :D

never burnt down any barns but we sure played in fire a lot. Learned that Milk Jugs leave life long scars when the flaming droplets hit ya.

was crack shot with guns from early age, being poor we shot & ate what we shot most times we had food.

living off land should be in the top 5

add learn how to fish with at least 4 different methods, see Spear Throwing, casting, netting and hand fishing. Fishing includes all swimming critters such as crawdads salamanders frogs ect. learning how to clean your catch is also very important, such as chipmunks are completely inedible :p turtle while edible must be cleaned out in a tub to make them tasty.
Carp are real good fertilizer for the garden is all we found them good for that is.

Grow your own food, plow, dig, furrow, sow/plant, stake, water, raise, harvest, clean & can your own food...

mechanical fix any & every thing if you have something that is broken and ready for recycle bin get the tools out and let the kids tear it apart.

We push our 6yo pretty hard sometimes, but he has done quite a bit.
When i was 6yo I was running around Berlin (before wall fell) unchecked lol.
He is about to turn 7 and he has gained a blue belt in taekwondo/hapkido
broken a board
Sparred with people twice his size
Got his first gun and shot it (.22 marlin)
Helped rebuild a motorcycle
Used tools and knives
Rode a horse,an elephant and a camel.
Played with an 8ft python

And lots more that I can't think of.
I bought him his first car when he was a year old.
In a couple more years we'll start restoring it('48 chrysler that has been in family since picked up in detroit!)
He's going to a braves game in Atlanta in a month with pawpaw.

I didn't mention he did all this with clubfeet,no toes and barely any fingers.
My kid's awesome!
An old man told me once the trick to kids and why grandparents are always the best is because they don't say no.
If the kid always gets told no,they just quit asking.
I follow this advice daily, and simply counsel the accidents and mistakes.

Smart kid, and more importantly, has a smart father.

Carp are real good fertilizer for the garden is all we found them good for that is.

Carp can live in a sewer settling pond, and personally, I wouldn't want to eat those, but when caught in clean water they're very good eating. I think the biggest objection to eating carp is all those small bones, and of course that seems a bit funny since salmon have the same thing and are very popular.

When I was 2, I explored the limestone bluffs of Osage County, on foot (barefoot) wearing only a diaper (or so I'm told) and claimed them for the U.S.A by right of conquest. I hitched a ride with a truck driver back to the house.

When I was three, I took an extended fishing trip to a remote lake in Pawhuska, but had to return home when my reel backlashed else face starvation. I cried myself to sleep, and when I awoke, Dad had fixed the birdnest in my reel.

When I was four, during another expedition, I was nearly eaten by wild coyotes, but was saved by my fierce Heinz 57 dog, "Cutie".

When I was 5, with my 2 year old brother on behind, I rode my tricycle at full speed out the kitchen door of our shotgun house. The house was about 4 foot off the ground, which was covered with something called "chat". Not unlike Evel Kneivil, we sailed effortlessly over the steps and not unlike Mr. Kneivel suffered a disaster, similar to his Las Vegas mishap.

When I was 6, I lead a platoon of Marines on a remote Pacific island to rescue John Wayne and flew a P-40 Flying Tiger easily eliminating all Japanese aircraft from Burma single handed .

When I was 7, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and I drove a herd of cattle from Dumas Texas, to Chicago, fighting Indians, rustlers, dust storms and blue northers all the way.

When I was 8, I got myself and the little neighbor girl in deep and serious trouble. Details cannot be released for another 52 years. The incident took place the same year I rescued a fledging Robin that fell from it's nest before it was ready.

When I was 9, I got my first BB gun (Red Ryder, 1000 shot saddle carbine) and the world has not been the same since.

I could go on, but I'm sure you have had enough.

I don't remember a spear growing up but there was an old Calvary sword in there. I also remember standing on a crate to use the radial arm saw. I have a dad who was very encouraging and helpful showing me stuff. He is now 77. Sometimes I'm surprised when people don't know how to bleed brakes. I'm like man didn't you every sit in the car pumping the brake pedal while your old man was on the ground screaming pump pump.

I intend to raise my grandson who is almost 3 the same way. He is at the barn with me almost every nite. I make him hold the 0 end of the tape and he has his own claw hammer ( an old one of mine). He has taken his first solo ride on horse and pulled the rein to stop it. And I'm not telling what he does on the tractors.

At work I try to take the kids that get hired on and work with them. I am so not shocked not surprised can't even describe how I feel , when I realize they have been raised like a veal calf. They will bleed to death from a scrape. They are pale and need to sit down. They have no clue the difference between a crescent wrench and channel locks.

Moms are good don't get me wrong , but for a kid to become a self reliant man he needs that father figure in his life. It will give him a balance of right and wrong. It will teach him life skills that a fatherless child will never know.

I would say you have lived a very eventful life. Hope you make it long enough to give us the details of when you were 8. That's a goo d post.

I might be enticed to reveal a few details early; I will be 128 in 52 years. I suspect the consent decree that I signed was made under extreme duress due to the multiple welts inflicted by a switch from our Peach tree. My friend the Judge, told me that due to my young age, and not having the benefit of counsel, it is not worth the paper it is written on. I would hate for Connie to find out about it though...:)
