doesn't the 5083, 5093 and 5101 all use the same frame and motor? I dont have a parts list in front of me to back this up, but if all it takes is changing out injectors and the fuel pump, thats WAY cheaper than paying for the extra ponies. Any thoughts?

Lot's of discussion on that topic here at TBN. IIRC - from many of the comments - the ECU; electronic control unit (computer) is also a key player in the horsepower output of the new tractor's.

In addition, some of the higher Hp models have larger turbos.

So, the "holy grail" of the horsepower chasers is a tuneable chip! But, no one has yet found a tuneable chip for JD (or at least "tuned" the rest of us here on TBN to it!)

But, if you're buying a new tractor... and you factor in the cost of an injector pump, injectors, tuneable chip, and turbo -- just as well plunk down another $2-3K and move up the chain!

And, for those with a factory warranty - it ain't worth it!

I def agree with that, but most people (me included) dont think they need more horsepower until they hook into something a bit to big (like 16' transport discs!) Now I've come to figure out I still dont have them set up right, but I never assumed I was going to be doing any serious tillage either. I like seeing if anyone has any clever ideas to!

Yeah I liked that story told on this site of the $16,000 'reprogram' or something along those lines. It is certainly frustrating to the consumer to feel like thousands of dollars buys you a software upgrade...I am pretty sure the 4x20 all differ by electronics. I think the turbos and intercoolers are the same...could be wrong though.

Especially when a simple chip can almost double your horsepower in a factory pickup truck(CR I know) Reliability comes into play here, but it is available. I equate the newer, none CR tractors to an older cummins with the mechanical fuel pump. Just need to do some tinkering and decide if its worth wrenching on a multi-thousand dollar piece of equipment that aftermarket parts are very expensive! I guess thats why I was hoping maybe someone else had monkied (is that a word?) around with theirs!
