I doubt any man , woman or child would be able to to do this very important service with no skills (i doubt they would test your competence) and then have the FACTORY back them all the way when the engine throws a rod .

IronHorse I think there are differences in how Daedong/Kioti deals with this issue in different markets. There may be some consumer protection laws in the US that prevent Kioti from taking as strong a stance as your tractor manufacturer does in Australia. In the US owners manual for the DK40se I found the following statement (and nothing like the one you posted):

Servicing: "Your dealer is interested in your new tractor and has the desire to help you get the most value from it. AFter reading this manual thoroughly, you will find that you can do some of the regular maintenance yourself." The rest of that section just talks about how to find you serial number and that you should be cautious about using non Kioti approved implements.

Under the Periodic Service heading, the owner's manual doesn't even mention the dealer and the initial 50 hr service is described in detail at a consumer level with photos, diagrams and lots of statements that begin with "you should....". It covers engine oil and filter, transmission oil and filters, front axle oil, brake pedal adjustment and grease fittings as well as checking wheel bolt torque. No where is the word dealer mentioned and the directions are clearly aimed at an owner not a technician.

No where could I find a statement as draconian as in the paperwork you received in Australia suggesting that the warranty would be invalidated if a dealer did not sign off on regular service (or specifically the initial 50hr service)

Draconian? That's a tad harsh. :) Kubota does the 50hr free of labor charge. Why would anyone not want the dealer to do it for free if they owned a Kubota? Anyhow, this is a Kioti thread, so, if Kioti says you can do it yourself and you enjoy that kind of work, then go ahead and do it yourself.

I don't think so. Harsh or severe is an appropriate description. IronHorse's tractor manual basically says that if he doesn't have the dealer do the 50hr service that the manufacturer will (may) refuse to honor the warranty. That is pretty draconian and something that I doubt would stand up to US consumer protection laws. For example, Ford cannot invalidate your warranty because you used Jiffylube instead of your Ford dealer so long as you can document that the oil changes were done per Ford's recommended schedule.

Many tractor dealers do throw in the 50 hour service as part of their sales pitch but for those of us (as a PT owner you should know:rolleyes:) who are many miles from their dealer, it is simply impractical to transport the tractor and too expensive to pay the dealer to come out to the field. Kioti USA seems to recognize this and gives the owner detailed instructions on how to do the 50hr service themselves. Apparently this is frowned upon in Australia, at least by IronHorse's tractor manufacturer.

Well,moss,why would I want to do it myself,several reasons,.Its just easier for me.I know when I can be here to do it,don't have to deal with being at home when they come,know its done right,[you know there are mecanics and than there are mecinics,that guy who did yours might just be one of THOSE mecinics],etc. And in any case every body thinks different bout most things,if you wanted to do it or didn't want to,that would be up to you.

Iron horse,my owners manual says nothing like the page you got,doesn't even address it. Thats what I was saying,if dealer had to do it,something like the system described in that last thing you sent,would have to be in place,it ain't in place over here across the big water.

So,in the land down under maybe thats the case,but not in this country,on kiotis anyways.

Question for other tractor brand owners,[like p.t. and kubota],does your manual or anyother paper work you got say this like the sheet that iron horse sent?

And,I wouldn't describe changing the oils and filters as having mechanical ability,guess you need some common sense to do it, but you don't need to be a mecinic.

I am pretty sure that Federal consumer protection law prevents companies from requiring that service be done at a dealer. You need to be able to prove the work was done (ie Jiffylube receipts or oil purchase receipts/log book etc) but you do not need to use a dealer for prescribed service. That is for cars but I'd imagine tractors would fit in the same category.

Think you are right,and it just makes sense.They[dealers] can and most do[all do?] charge you money when they do work and they use their parts,at their increased prices,as is the american way. No way would it be right to make you use them,if you don't want to. Now as far as warrenty,yes,they could say,either we do it or no warrenty,but than consumer could say,well come and do it than,I don't have anyway to get it to you,,and I ain't got but this much money and you'll have to drive over between 1 and 2 the 14th cause thats the only time my gate will be unlocked,and watch out for those two big dogs,they hate strangers,etc.

But,its not a question[now] as to do you want to or not,its become a question of can I? I never question why people do things like this and other simular things,people are people,what ever floats their boat. But when it becomes a question of CAN I, than thats a whole new thing. And in this case,if it ain't in writing,than you can. Maybe not in the land down under,but here,yes we can!

My tractor is not a Kioti (it's the only manual i had) but rather a New Holland , you know , Case , Fiat , Europe , America , worldwide , the manual i have is for ALL countries . And to keep it on topic , we are talking about the FIRST service , when the machine gets a multi point checkup (that does require a licensed mechanic to initiate the warranty) , not just the periodic oil change that anyone can do . If someone bought a New Holland anywhere in the world and did not take it back for it's 50 hour checkup and service and did it themselves and something went wrong with the machine . The judge at the small claims court would say , where is your proof that the service was even done ? You would say , i have the reciepts from Super Cheap for the oil and filters . The judge would say , how do we know the oil was not put in your car ? Are you qualified to detect a fault the tractor may have had ? He would make you pay all court costs as well as any costs the factory was out of pocket for and tell you to get out .

Where are the dealers that sell Kioti tractors ? I would like to hear from them . Does the Kioti/Daedong factory know that this has been happening ? Are they in fact happy to let the public certify the tractor is free of defects and will warrant , without question , the tractor for the remaining term ? If i am told by a dealer this is fact , and not by someone banging his head on the floor , i will pull my head in .
