Re: 54

BigPete, thansk for the advice, Yes, I kinda used the hey the GT225 is too small for snow over 6 inches, and I going to have to take care of a 20 yard mulch pile soon, instead of 10 yards. SCFO recognizes the potential of her increased involement in the yard's grunt work, so, ..etc. she does not grumble much, but she still grumbles. The mower deck will be purchased but I gotta pay the taxes first, so I am angling for that, then the mower deck, and soon like you said.

BTW what do you think of a rear mower decj with mulch kit?

Re: 54

After twenty years of blissful marriage, my wife just smiles at my rationalizations and files them under her "Marital Debate Capitol" account for strategic use on a future date/issue.

As far as the 3PH mower you would probably save some money and you would probably be happy with the cut (I don't know anybody mulching with a rear mower, though). The downside is maneuverability around obstacles, swinging wide turns, and farmers's lumbar condition from trying to watch something 180 degrees opposite of the direction of travel. Bottom line: I think you would be happier with a mid-mount because of the size of your lot, the number of obstacles, and the number of turns you will make.

You should probably stop driving yourself crazy and just buy the 54". You'll be perfectly happy and, even if you are not, you will tell us and the wife that you are.

Re: 54\" Vs 60\" MMM Deck, Which one again?

I would not get the 54--period unless I had some narrow gates. The 60 is heavier built and is easier to cut in close with, easier to cut into corners with and will cut around trees etc with a smaller uncut circle than the 54. Yes, the 60 will in fact be more "manuverable", I would also hate to see my neighbor on a cheap Scotts with a 25 horse briggs and the same 54 inch deck!!!!!!
Don't get the 54, it is not up to the tractors capacity and the 60 inch is a better deck. Hey you showed us a pic of your house, you did not appear to be on skid row so why all this penny pinching, send the wife out to get some new shoes or something and you go get a 60 inch deck. J

Re: 54\" Vs 60\" MMM Deck, Which one again?

John,

I was going to suggest the 3pt finish mower. However, remembering Nuru's previous posts discussion this issue. I figured, no sense in even mentioning it.

$1000 is too much for the difference in an 54" and 60" MMM in my book for home use. Doing commercial work, makes perfect sense.

Nuru,

So they dropped the price $400.... Still $600 more for six inches of mowing and a heaftier unit. Bag the 60".... save you bucks for a FEL or another implement. Guaranteed, you'll need something to help you with the CFO's chore list. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Re: 54\" Vs 60\" MMM Deck, Which one again?

Hi Guys,

Well today I finally got a chance to use my 4100 with the 413 3 point mower. As far a cutting grass to he honest I was not happy with the results. In fact I put a bandage on my Sears SS/16 and recut the back yard area. Now the other side of the story, I went down in the back area and cleared some pasture with thick brush up to 1 inch or more, and man I was impressed. The noise and banging would scare a man to death but checking the unit out there was no damage. I hit a lot of large Austin Chalk rocks which breakup but the mower just took it in stride. Slowed down a bit, but just ate them up and spit them out. We, (me and my pucker factor) went down to Low 3rd gear, 4 Wheel Drive and I opened up a lot of area. When the grass gets high in a month or so I will give the 413 another bite at it, but for around the house where I want short grass, I may consider going to a mid deck mower in the future. I was sure impressed at the power this 4100 has and what it can do. My next experment with be trying to use a post hole digger. Hell to have the toys makes life fun. LOL

Re: 54

I have a 54"mmm and am very happy with it. We mow about 2acres and have some very narrow spots. When I was quoted the differ. between 54 & 60 was $600 and for me it was not worth it. As long as I take care of it, and don't go brush hoging with it, it should last forever. Just my 2cents. Good luck.

Re: 54

BigPete, I hit 20 this year - hell there is suppossed to be a trip to the Carribean this year on the books. whew i almost forgot about that one - I gotta save up for that too!

Well since the price drop and limited availability of the 54", I may actually squeeze some funds out and get the 60" but that does remain to be seen. I am going to remove sme of the obstacles and some of the smaller areas that I have cut in the past to make this a lot easier than it would be normally, so the deck size probably won't make a big difference. But we will see.

Tres, LOL! Yeah, the penny pinchin is SOP right now with the tax bill, but that could all change in April if my current plans go through. I will probably take her shopping thogh so that I can get the deck and keep her quiet!

Re: 54\" Vs 60\" MMM Deck, Which one again?

TerryinMD; Good points and like I told BigPete, I will get to the final decision this week and in Aprile i will pick-up one or the other. The dealer does indicate that he can get the 54" in a week, but he has the 60" instock. $600 dollars for 6 inches, well that does seem still to be a littel steep, but it is not outside of my range at this point in time, but hey, I might want that 36" scoop for that mulch job too! ($400 delivered). So we will see.
