Very nice job on the rear weight LetsRoll and Ford850. Pictures surely help show different approaches.:D:D:D

One Advantage of the drawbar, if so used going through the pipe is that it could be quickly removed and used for another project, or even to 'draw' with it.

just back to the site , enjoying all the posts , not my idea but proved good and that is to leave the top 10-12 inches of barrell unfilled to create a place on top of your ballast barrell to throw chains, chainsaw , etc. seems i always need a spot to carry something along with my tractor: lunchbox with snacks and water is always nice. :)

Now don't you go interjecting some clear logic and forward thinking into this discussion! ;)

Sounds like you are making more of a deal out of it than I am.. you are the one that had to (bleep) out a word with asterisks in your reply.

I was also considering PVC pipe.. and I mentioned that since the chase pipe would be suitable for either the rod or the drawbar design.. that it was cost neutral.

IMHO.. if you own a tractor.. a drawbar is a great implement to own.. It's probably the cheapest one there is too..

And.. as for the 10$ vs the 25$.. if the purpose to use the 10$ one thru the pipe is to replace it.. then.. why not use the 25$ one and not worry about replacing it.. That time to replace it, and drill or tap the ends = tangible cost... My time isn't free.. nor is yours or the original posters.

I'm not sure why you are still campaigning 'FOR" the pipe... I'm in agreement with that.. I've stated so numerous times.. IE.. slide the drawbar thru the pipe.. that way it can be withdrawn and re0used.. and so, as you say.. you can roll the weight.

benefit the drawbat has is it is likely strong enough to not need to be repalced.. unlike the rod that may or may not be. ..

Actually, neither of you is doing too good with consideration of pvc pipe.

Why not??.. the chase pipe is just there to make a void.. it's not a structural part of the design.

I made the mistake of putting my pins in the center of the barrel, on each side. This left the barrel balanced with almost no weight on the the toplink. When I inadvertantly hit the draft control lever the barrel lifted all the way up & bent the toplink to a 90 degree angle. If I were to build another I'd put the pins in the front third of the barrel. Also put a flat plate out thru the back to bolt/weld/attach a hitch to. MikeD74T

Kind of like this? Opps :D

why not just use/make something similar to a '3pt carry all' and just fill the drum with water? (strapped to carry all)

that will give a multi-purpose setup that would have many uses.
1. carry all = a 3pt platform to transport a variety of items
2. 55 gal drum = many liquid uses. plastic drums recommended if spraying liquid fertilizers (corrosive) if a pto pump is in the future (55 x 8.3 = 456.5 lbs of water)

I had the same idea: multi task the carry all. I want a carry all anyway, but can the carry all manage the weight? I have a JD 2305 and the KK carry all for my size tractor is rated at 450#. I wonder if that's enough ballast.

If you want a carry all anyway, you might as well try it to see how it works for a ballast too. It won't be as compact as a barrel type ballast since it will hang out a foot further, and due to the square shape it is a little more difficult to back into tight areas if that matters. But overall not a big difference. I have a carry all and use it all the time so I'm sure you'll like it for many things other than a ballast too.
