Are you saying if my 6-volt generator is a 3-brush, it will easily convert to a 12-volt 2 brush? How? By replacing the field coils? I don't intend to do this myself, but want to know in advance if the generator shop knows what they are suggesting?

I specifically said that you can make a 3 brush genny into a 2 brush genny. I didn't say a 3 brush 6v genny could be made into a 2 brush 12v genny.. specifically.. though it MIGHT.
all depends on if the shop can get the field coils for 12v in that size.
they way you make a 3 brush genny into a 2 is to not use the 3rd brush and instead run the wire from the 3rd brush out to a regulator, vs a cutout.
the genny should should know all this. if they don't.. I'd keep shopping...
