6013/7013 isn't my go to, but used right there is nothing wrong with it.... I often use fleetweld 57 for outside work that would otherwise be done with mig. Runs very nicely once you understand it isn't 7018 and isn't ran exactly the same as 7018.

What is your go to rod for cast iron welding, steel to cast iron welding?

Honestly, O/A brazing or O/A welding if both pieces are grey iron.
If I'm forced to stick weld for some reason, supercast 90

Curioscity I git, seems like every Xspert internet welder gold arm says 6013 no good. All kinds of badmouthing 6013, but tons of 6013 made every day, and other than capping pipeline around 2/3 the world must be warehouses filling wid no good rod. I just don't see dat bein a good product line for any factory.

Maybe real welders got no need to be on internet cryin like girls.

All rods have their place. Different applications different rods. In the industry and with the continuous standards testing things change and new products offered all the time. I remember when Fleetweld 5 then 5P and 7 were the gold standards for carbon steel. They are still around. In the old days we could not understand the trend toward 70,000 psi rods when the carbon steel products we were welding did not exceed 60,000 psi. We even did downhand welding as well as uphand but not as common as it is now.

Back when I was just starting out with a stick welder I had an older Lincoln AC only Buzz Box and used 6011. I went in the LWS looking for some 7018. The guy new I was a beginner and said that my Buzz Box had a low Open Circuit Voltage and that I wouldn't like trying to start that 7018. Then he said why don't you try this, it will do the same thing as 7018 on mild steel and can tolerate some dirt, and he handed me some Messer 80T-AC+. Immediately that became my go to rod with that Buzz Box. Very easy start, good penetration, and a smooth bead. A little expensive at about $2.25 a LB.

Later I did try some 7018AC rods and he was right - they were frustrating. Now, with my EverLast PA 200ST and it's higher OCV and auto arc force 7018 is my favorite go to rod.

Interesting. your welding area is right next to your wood pile.

It's not the welding it's the gouging, grinding and flame burning that I pay more attention to, all of that is pointed to center of shop, not towards the wood pile. Flame cutting outside at certain times of the year can be just as bad around here to, just have to a ware of hot work.

I have about 250 lbs of welding rods that I got from the end of a project that I am wondering how useful they may be for my small scale farm shop. They are E6010, E6011, E6013 and M7018. What are the most useful rods for my purpose?

3/32" and 1/8" E6011 DCEP work for almost everything I weld. I weld a lot of stuff with 14ga square tube and the 3/32" rod works well for that, typically set between 57 and 65 amps. When I'm positioning and tacking things together, I'll bump the amps up to 70 or more to minimize the rod sticking and make a nice flat tack.

When I weld 2 3/8" fencing, I use the the 1/8" at about 95- 105 amps.

If I could only have one welding rod it would be 6011, it isn't pretty but it is dang versatile... Being that I have a DC welder and if I had 2 rods on hand it would be 6011 and 7018. I'm not as careful with storage of my 7018 as I should be but they're Excaliber and weld nice and aren't growing powder or rusting...

I've never used 6010 but it's supposed to be the DC version of 6011 (6011 works just fine on DC), 6013 is about as easy as 7018 to be pretty but I don't think it penetrates as well? I don't remember...

If you have an ac only welder, you can't use the 6010. 6011 is same as 6010, but can be used with both an ac and dc machine. The rod is great coz it will burn through rust, dirt, paint, whatever. If you need to weld something pronto w/o a bunch of prep work, that's the rod you want. Quick and dirty.

7018 is finicky in terms of storage...if you see that the flux is brittle and cracking off, the rod is no good. I prefer the 6013, less worries about storage.
