Hello everyone!

I am new to this board but have been following the discussions for a while now. These discussions have already answered many of my questions, but I need to ask for some advice regarding the 790.

We have just purchased 5 acres and will be moving in the near future.

Here is what I see as my uses for this tractor. I need to mow pasture, clean up some overgrown pasture area (tree removal), dirt work around the house, and arena maintenance. The only problem that I see with this size tractor is the fact that I will need to be able to move a 1000-1250lb round bale to the pasture about twice per month (flat ground) and it looks like it is a little weak in that department. According to the specs on this tractor it is only rated at 815lbs at 24" past the lift point.

The problem is that with only 5 acres I really do not want to get a larger tractor just for this reason. Any advice that you may have would be appreciated.

Thanks again!

First, you're not going to move that bale (1000-1250 lb) with a bale spear on the 790...too heavy!

So, two options...either break the bale down elsewhere and bring smaller bits at a time for your horse, or look around for a tractor with greater hydraulic capacity.

Most of the the newer designs...NH TC 30, Kubota's...Deere 4200...have greater advertised lift ratings at the 3PH.

However, that bale would be pretty dangerous to move with any of the compacts, so you might want to consider your options on bring that hay in.

The 790 would be a great machine for your other tasks, however.

Thanks for the info!

I had a feeling that was going to be the case, but thought I would ask just in case someone might have had some different experience. Especially since one dealer said that it would lift more than the spec.

I have looked at the Kubota, NH and Kioti. However, I was really hoping for a Deere. I know that Deere offers some other models in this size that would do the job, but from what I have seen around here they make a pretty good leap in price. Kubota and Kioti both have models in this size that are a little heavier and can lift more without having to get much larger in physical size.

Speaking of, you make a good point on the safety aspects of moving something that heavy with a small tractor. However, I have convinced myself that I should be ok since I am only moving these bales a very short distance and am on totally flat ground.

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experiences!

I have been moving the large round bales with a bale spear for the three point hitch. The 790 will not lift the bale completely off of the ground, but it will get enough weight off it to be able to move it around with only the tail end dragging a bit. I know that this is not ideal, but I had my tractor before my horse so I'm just trying to get by with what I've got.
