I have a new JD 790. Its a nice little tractor, kinda cramped, but once your in, its not bad. My question is about the exhaust pipe. Could this pipe be turned a different direction. Anyone aware of a kit, etc that might allow it. The smell and burnt diesel is intoxicating. My new tractor really doesn't smoke, but the smell is pretty bad. It smells much like a barbeque that has the lighter fluid still burning off. After about 15 minutes, my stomach aches and can imagine what my lungs must think about it. I think JD should have provided supplemental oxygen for users of it. My neighbor bought one of those ugly little orange ones and it doesn't behave like this at all. I want it. Thanks fellas, Pam

Pam, I own a 790 and was having trouble understanding your issue until I saw your name (I know, not very PC). Now I realize the exhaust might just be a guy thing /w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif I rather enjoy the sound and smell of the diesel engine humming along. Actually, the thing that gets me more is that the exhaust exit is right at ear level for me and long hours at PTO speed force me to wear ear plugs. I honestly don't notice the smell when I'm moving along, but again that may be the guy thing, or just me.

I'm not aware of any exhaust kits for the 790, but if you take it to a decent muffler shop I'm sure they could reroute it for you. Make sure they understand where any/all of your potential implements sit for clearance /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: 790 Exhaust stinks

You can convert the exhaust to underslung (horizontal running under the tractor body) and discharge under the rear axle behind you...

Any exhaust fumes, whether its diesel or gas is not healthy breathing it in... like one big stinky cigarette/cigar with all those nastys...

(Pam, you may also want to change your original subject line... so people don't get the wrong idea of what you actually mean.../w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif)

To paraphrase somewhat..."I love the smell of diesel fuel in the morning...".
The aroma of moist early morning dirt, a cup of black coffee, a cigar and diesel. All is good.

Pam,
Check the base of your muffler where it bolts to the exhaust manifold (look at the notches and bolt pattern). If its like my 750, it can be unbolted, turned and rebolted 90deg. forward which will give you a horizontal exhaust exiting out the front of the tractor with no other mods or kits needed, just need to swivel the tip after you lay the muffler horizontal. If you have a FEL though, it may then be like mine and there is not enough clearance to lay it down.

That "smell" cured me of excessive drinking, smoking, not taking baths, cursing, womanizing and other lewd behavior. I’ll keep mine vertical.

Re: 790 Exhaust stinks

Thank you John, I was hoping that it might be possible to do. Perhaps I should have said "Smelly Deere". At any rate, I don't care how much one enjoys smelling diesel, the long term effects are very detrimental to your health and the short term effects can be simple nausea. Included in with my tractor is a muffler type thing on top of the exhaust pipe that appears to help quiet the exhaust noise. It looks like a bunch of discs stacked on top of each other. I suppose that it would be necessary to also move that device if I can reroute the pipe under the tractor. My neighbors orange tractor, I forget the brand has it coming out the side and to the front. I have tried it and really like how the exhaust works. Even when I smell the exhaust it does not seem as pungent as mine. Do you know why? My neighbors tractor is probably better then mine which might explain it, but mine is prettier. Mine runs very smooth, very quiet and does not smoke. Thanks to all, Pamela

It may be what you can tolerate, my old 670 hardly smells at all (of course, I smoke...I hardly smell either). It's also a possibility your injection pump make be set wrong.
Suggest you go to the dealer and ask to try another 790 to see if it's the same as the one you own...just to ensure the smell is the "nature of the beast" and not something out of adjustment.
Boy, I thought the last Kubota with a forward swept exhaust was the B6100. That's an old machine...
"ugly little Orange ones"...I'll have to tell my neighbor about that....

Re: 790 Exhaust stinks

Pam,
I agree with you and I hate how long the smell/taste stays in the back of your throat. Some of the jokers over at the Yanmar club sugested cheap wine. It is common for the Yanmar guys to put on a longer stack to get the exhaust up out of your face. I had a muffler shop make one up for me. Of course a taller pipe reaches out and snags branches easier so you have to be a little more careful. Have you checked with JD? They may actually stock a longer pipe which would fit and be the right color and everything.
