JohnnyDeere, sorry this is a little late, but I just came upon this thread because it was "resurrected" recently. I was reminded about what Paul Harvey suggested back in the 70s when automobile pollution was the big thing and leaded gas was phasing out. He said we should burn bourban - it probably wouldn't help the pollution situation, but no one would care! The same might have been true with you and your 790, but now we'll never know. /w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif

I have a 790 and it does not smoke ... at least not that I can smell and it has the stock configuration for the stack with the bend toward the front of the tractor .... I'm sorry that you had a bad experince as I find this to be a good machine that works well and hard when called on ... maybe your injectors were running rich or the air cleaner is in need of cleaning ....

Congrats JohnnyDeere but aren't you going to have to do something with the name? Hey, glad to see you are seeing the world from a less smokey perspective now. One down, a few more to go!!!! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif . There is hope. J

Hi Pam,
Might look for a distributer of "biodiesel". It is refined soybean or vegetable oil. Look up "Griffin Industries" or "SoyGold". The biodiesel added to your fuel will reduce the diesel smell somewhat and give the aroma of hot french fry oil and they say it is good for your diesel engine. My understanding is that the "sulfur" in diesel fuel has been reduced to control emissions. Biodiesel helps to restore the "lubricity" that the sulfer provided. Makes your engine run just a bit smoother, and a little less "smelly".
Try a little and see what happens.
Steve

While I am happy for the new orange owner, I wonder if the "stinky" 790 had bad fuel, dirty injectors, poor compression or some other malfunction that could be fixed. That said, some engines run cleaner than others, the Kubota engines overall are very clean running. I would not have minded a bit if the "stinky" 790 had been sent my way, I imagine I could have made do some way or nuther.
It is kinda funny, like on our recent road trip vacation through New Mexico, here in Kansaw you rarely see Toyota trucks and most folks have JD tractors, in NM I saw mostly Toyotas and imports and lot's of NH and Kubota and Kioti tractors. Funny how consumers consume differently regionally. J

Perhaps I should be sure to make clear my decision to purchase a new tractor. While my 790 was a nice tractor, some of the creature comforts and operational ease were lacking. Funny thing is, when I got the JD 790, it seemed so delightful. It rolled forward, backwards, turned left and right, it pulled implements and turned the PTO. All the things that any of todays tractors do. It sure beat the ol wheelbarrow and shovel to bits. And to think, I remember getting the wheelbarrow and being excited. Boy is it all relative. After trying my neighbors tractor, I realized that while my 790 with its smelly exhaust was really nice, it could be improved on. My thoughts were always that, its a tractor, its got 5 wheels if you include the steering wheel, it rolls around on the ground, it starts with a turn of the key, moves dirt etc., little did I realize just what a difference a few inches in the seat area means, a transmission that goes forward and backwards without shifting, and exhaust that does not smell, at least not in the operators area. All these things were just to much. My 790 while a great tractor, was like living in the bathroom, my new tractor is like living in the family room. So much more spacious. Best of all is the transmission. I love it. Forwards or backwards, its a snap and no jerking. The 790 was quiet for sure, perhaps even quieter then my new tractor, but my new one sounds powerful (I think I've got some Tim the toolman in me). While my new tractor is a Kubota, I think I'll just keep the JohnnyDeere moniker since it was my first love, well even thats not true since really it was my True Temper wheelbarrow. Take care fellas, whether orange, green, blue, or other, my favorite colors are RED, WHITE, and BLUE!!! Pam
