8' pull-type disk behind L5460, possible?

If you purchase the disc, let us know how it works. I would like to purchase a disc at some point in the future. As you said a tiller is slow work.

Thanks for everyone who had something informative to contribute. Again I knew this disc was at the max end for my tractor but maybe wishing others had pulled it off with decent results. I figured the small amount of ground I need to work up per year maybe just maybe it could be done. This is the only ground engaging work I need to do with my tractor. Gotta get back to the city so thanks again!
Honestly if your getting a tiller anyway why not get some type of chisel plow that would work behind your tractor just to loosen the soil up some then till ? It would probably be faster overall . Lots of times you have to go over the area multiple times to get the soil worked up how you want it with a disk. It's really not any faster.

I think the issue will be TRACTION, not power. Your R4 tires will spin out if it's the least bit wet, but I think if the ground is perfectly dry for limited use you'll be fine.

If the ground is soft, your are not moving.

Hydro would be my other concern, but if you are not disking for days on end you are likely fine.

I pull a little 24 plate tandem drag disk, hair over 6 feet wide. It's old but it's paid for and has all new plates. 40 HP 2wd utility on 13.6-28s R1 will play with it when the ground it right. Old 25 HP gasoline 2wd used to pull one fine too.

I can pull it 8 MPH with 70 HP if I want and through almost anything.

I ran a 10 foot years ago behind an 85 HP FWA Deere. It was too much disk in the wet places, not enough in the dry.

One thing obvious in your video and that is, you don't have the gangs splayed out at all. Crank the angle out and then report back. Discs don't disc when running parallel, they disc properly when they are angled out the more, the better.

I bet with the gangs splayed out correctly, you don't have enough arse to pull it anyway.

Here's another video of my 4520 jd pulling the same disk in the same spot . Obviously the JD is about 10 more horsepower but it's also a gear drive tractor.
B range 4th gear.

Study these two Monroe Tufline TPH Disc Harrows:

TL43 SERIES
TL43972222 - 8' - Pan Spacing 7-1/2"/9" - weight 1,475 pounds

TX4 HEAVY SERIES
T4X972222B - 8' - Pan Spacing 7-1/2"/9" - weight 1,591 pounds

Both of these "Big Ag" discs for compact tractors will require HST/MED and almost full or full throttle to pull at a good clip. You will appreciate your loaded rear tires pulling either Disc.

May just me but I'd also look at the Monro Tufline TW5 pull-behind series as well - the three point mounted will likely be cheaper, but having an implement close to 1/3 of the tractor's weight hanging off the back on a 3pt can get be rather noticeable if/when it swings from one side to the other while lifted.

I know it's definitely noticeable when the EA XTreme Duty Large Deluxe Box Frame Disc Harrow (ETA-XD-LG-BF-DH-20-18) shifts (when lifted) on my L3560. ...and since I think I forgot to mention it earlier I've got R4's on mine, and it is an HST.

So what you're looking to do is potentially run an 8' pull-behind disc on a 54-ish HP tractor across flat ground with sandy/loam soil -- or go about 14"/ 2 pans wider than I do across flat-ish clay/loam soil with tractor that's relatively similar in weight (a bit lighter with wheel weights vs loaded tires -- which may also be partially offset by difference in operator weight 😇) but almost 20hp less....

While neither is the ideal tractor (nor configured in the ideal way) for the task, I have a hard time the larger would be completely incapable given what I'm doing with mine .....

BTW - a hydraulic top link is useful thing when using a 3pt mounted disc as it will allow for changing the pitch of the disc on the go (which can be handy if/when you need to shift balance/pressure to get a better cut with the front gangs)
