I decided to change the engine oil and filter, and the hydro fluid and filter at 50 hours. It's not really due until 200 and 400 hours respectively. But I figured it would be cheap insurance. Turns out this insurance really is not that cheap.

The attached bill shows a total parts cost of $220.20. The single biggest expense was the hydro filter, which is $85.49. This is not a typo. My dealer is a relatively high volume CUT dealer with two locations. They did not have this filter in stock and had NEVER SOLD ONE BEFORE! The parts guy said people don't bother to change this filter because it costs too much.

Is this true? Has anyone else ever changed this filter on their 3X20?

What kind of oil did you use? Hopefully, you didn't take out your "run in" oil...your rings will not be happy...

I have not actualy done anything yet. The oil I bought was the JD 15W40. Are you saying I need to leave this oil in a while longer?

The manual says change engine oil at 200 hours but if you look under the hood, it will say change engine at 50 hours and then every 200 hours which is what I did. I plan to wait on the hydraulic oil change at the recommended interval.

No, I'm not saying that. I don't know whether you do or not. However, sometimes it's important to run the oil that comes in a new engine for the specified interval because it is designed to help the rings seal. I don't know if this applies to you or not, but someone here probably does...

That filter is more like a screen that can be re used. I had it on my Ford 1700. It is basically on mine was a stainless steel pleated filter much finer than my electric shaver screen. I used a toot brush and some diesel fuel and I cleaned to new condition,

There has been much discussion about this topic here in the past. I contacted JD Tech Support a few months ago for my JD 3720 and they said change according to the decal under the hood. My JD dealer shop manager told me the same thing so I changed all fluids and filters at 50 hrs, and he strongly recommended using JD 10W-30 Break-In oil for the first engine service and then JD regular 10W-30 diesel engine oil for all subsequent changes (according to decal). His argument for using Break-In oil is to seat the rings properly.
Yes, the hydraulic filter is very expensive and my dealer also had to order it. Think it was around $75 a few months ago.

KB, for what it's worth, my 3320 was coming up on 50 hours and I looked at the individual prices for the filters and almost croaked. I did find a filter kit on e-bay that contained two engine oil filters, one hydraulic filter, one air filter and one fuel filter for "buy-it-now" price of $119 shipped UPS ground for $10.75 total $129.75. Looking at JDParts, the individual part prices are...

Filters Air, engine primary RE68048 $22.99
Filters Fuel filter MIU800645 $12.04
Filters Oil, engine M806419 $7.56
Filters Hydraulic filter LVA13065 $92.96

Total, $143.11 w/ TN tax $156.35

The seller's handle is "thegreendealer".

Not a whole lot in savings but sure better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, I guess.

Here's a couple of posts on the subject of filters...

Good info on the importance of break-in oil. But....

Hmmmm... Mtce label on the hood of my 3320 says 50 hours. Owner's manual says 200 hours. And now jdparts says 100 hours, maybe 200 hours depending on how the machine is used.

Nothing like consistency....

Like stated above, I went through this same conflicting agonizing dilemma a few mos ago with my 3720. In fact I contacted JD tech support and got two different answers (50 hrs and 200 hrs) on two different inquiries from two different people. So I decided to just play it safe and change at 50 hrs, ie oil & filters for transmission, engine and front axle. It's not cheap but it give me peace of mind and some protection if/when there is a warranty issue. But, I agree it should be spelled out clearly in black and white.

After reading this, It makes me mad that I did not ask for these filters to be part of the deal when I bought my 3320. I just forgot about it. I got free filters when I bought my last Deere. JC

I changed my hydro filter and fluid at 280 hrs.... of course the "T" fence post through the filter made it sort of essential :)

Rehabing a old pasture and found an old fence nobody knew about. It was flat on the ground and popped up a post as I went over.

The 400 hr fluid change is spendy no matter how you figure it. But so was the tractor.

Did you use regular oil or break in oil? There seems to be conflicting info on that as well. My dealer says they have never used anything other than regular JD oil in the specified grade on their 50 hr. services. The link above from bjcsc shows break-in oil is to be used for at least 100 hrs.

On the one hand, break-in oils are not as essential as they once were (due to better initial machining) but on the other hand, it's hard to figure out what to do when every place you look you get a different answer! We all want to do exactly what were supposed to do but no one is making it easy...

If it were me, I'd leave it alone and change it at 100 hours. Or, if you would feel better changing it, change it and put the break-in oil back in. When I got to 100 hours, I noticed my OM said that all the other 5X25 tractors were due for an oil change, but my first one wasn't due until 300 hours. When I was at the dealer picking up a new hyd. filter (which, BTW, was $54), I asked about the engine oil and the service guy said all were due at 100 hours. So I bought the oil and the filter. When I got home, I called some different service departments and was given both answers. So I called JD Ag Customer support and asked them. They looked it up, and in fact the interval had been changed back to 100 hours and the initial service guy was spot on.

Folks, change your engine and hydraulic oils & filters at the first 50-hours. Also CLEAN the hydraulic internal screen, This gets out most of the metal shavings that was in the interior housings when it was milled at the factory.

Then change your engine oil & filter every 100 hrs. up to 500 hrs. using any good diesel engine oil. Then use Delvac 1 made by Mobil and start the change interval at every 200 hrs.

Change your Hydraulic oil, filter and clean the internal screen every 400 hrs. and use JD Hy guard Low visc.

I've got 3500 hrs. on my currant tractor and have used this method since new. I just recently had to put a gasket on my oil pan and had a neighbor help me, (he is a retired Diesel mechanic) and he said he had never seen the inside of a diesel engine that clean with as many hours, SO you decide:)

I used JD Break-In oil for 50 hr change and was told (by JD dealer) to use JD 10W-30 for next change.

I am about to hit 200hrs myself. I bought the $100 kit from my dealer that included the $85 trans filter. I think this kit is the only way to buy filters for the 3X20s. My dealer after ordering my kit said they will be doing the same for their fluid changes in teh spring since it such a good value. They did not know it existed for the 3X20 series until I had them order mine.
