Around 35 years ago as a teenager, I helped my Dad rebuild the 861 that I have now. The Ford dealer (very good friend) loaned my Dad a puller to remove the sleeves. The tool this guy makes looks like a much better method to me. After all, if you cant fix it with anything else, use a hammer :)

I was hoping this might give Mitchell some ideas.

I've seen the pulled work too, know people that picked one up

Mitchell have you seen the videos and tools on this site? Ford Engine Sleeve Service Tools
No I haven't seen those videos. I like that. We used to put in wheel seals in tractor/trailer hubs with a similar tool. I have considered taking a 3 inch pipe about 12" long and trying to use it to drive into the aluminum plate I made from the bottom while pulling on the center with the threaded rod to break the sleeve loose. However my aluminum plate is no where near as thick as that tool driver in the video, so it makes me nervous to bring out my BFH just yet, but it may be necessary. Thanks.

I'm not sure if I'd call this success or not, but at least I was able to get that first sleeve up about 2". It fought me for every 1/16" too. I wrenched, I impact socketed, I beat with a hammer and block of wood and even got my air hammer out to try to drive the dang thing out. I hoped that once it broke free it would be easy to push on out then, but noOOOOO. It doesn't appear rusted any at all, just a lot tighter than I expected; no room for rust I guess. I got to rig up some kind of higher stand frame to give me the room to pull the entire length of that sleeve out tomorrow. Thanks for the ideas.

i'd darn sure hit it with some penetrant oil at the top and bottom and be letting it wick in overnight.

Better too tight than too loose. This is from a previous owner fitting too loose liners. Most of the liner went into the crank case, some onto the top of the piston. Engine (Perkins) rebuilt and magnefluxed fine

Making some progress. I got 3 of the 4 sleeves out with my homemade puller setup. If I didn't have an impact wrench and air pressure, I'd still be wrenching on the first one. While the last 3-4" are only somewhat easier than the first, the entire length of the sleeve is pretty darn tight like right on the verge of stripping out threads on my rod/nuts before they snap up a 1/16" at a time with a loud pop, but so far it is holding up and I anticipate getting the last one out of there tomorrow. I hope the new ones go in easier than these old ones are coming out. Thanks for all the ideas and patience.

don't bet on it. :)

at least you can be pretty sure you won't need any sleeve retainer!

Oh, am I so glad now that I had a diesel shop do mine. I would not have your patience.

Glad you are making progress. Soundguy is right, dont bet on an easy go putting them in. If I remember correctly, we put our sleeves in the freezer overnight and may have heated the block some with a torch. Then took one out of the freezer, got it started straight, laid a piece of wood on top and applied a 3lb shop hammer as needed.

Ouch. That may be what the previous owner did to mine... Lasted about 10 hours after I bought it. First picture is #2 cylinder where the lip fell off. The second picture was #1 cylinder which disintegrated. #3 was left intact. Maybe he got the hang of it by the third cylinder.

I don't know what happened to yours. I am not saying that the way we did it was anywhere close to the correct way, it is just the method that was used. :) The 861 has ran well for 35 years since!

Finally got the last sleeve #4 out this afternoon just as the rain began.

Although it was the easiest one to start, it was the most difficult to get all the way out and cupped the aluminum pull plate I made in the process.

My new parts have arrived, so I think tomorrow I can officially claim to be putting everything back together then.

I had my doubts about my homemade pulling rig, but it held up long enough to get them out. Now I got to come up with two longer metal braces to span the bottom of the engine where the oil pan attaches to pull in my new sleeves from the opposite direction. While I may be able to bang the new sleeves in place with a 2x4 and a BFH; I'd rather try to pull them down with my 5/8" rod/nuts and a flat plate on top of the new sleeve.

I wouldn't say I'm patient, just too cheap (or poor) to afford to pay better men than me to do this for me. In my next life I plan to be rich and sit on my butt, drink beer and pick my banjo while I pay others to do work for me. Them Ragheads can have their 72 virgins. That's too much like work keeping that many women happy. :)

It's official, I'm putting it back together. Today I cleaned the block and scraped off all the old gasket material and greasy crud. I gotta' say, what ever that old gasket sealer used on the head was, is almost as tough as the metal block.

I pulled the old chipped main gear on the crankshaft and gently beat on a my new one. Naturally, my gear puller was not long enough to grab the old gear and I had to rig up a block with 2 bar clamps to get it to come off.

Then took a piece of lumber and a big hammer to a new cylinder sleeve and managed to beat it in a little over halfway before the wood began splintering and the sleeve became hard to move. Blew off the chips and dust and rigged my 5/8" rod/nuts through an old ring hitch I had made up for the truck that just happened to have a 5/8" retainer pin hole drilled through the 2x2 square tubing that was long enough to span the bottom of the block and pulled the sleeve on down with my air wrench. That last 1/2" or so was tough, but the sleeve bottomed out; so three more to go.

Can you post a picture? Sounds clever. I like the air wrench idea.
