I'd check the points, clean if burnt. Check and clean the inside of the dist cap. Check for spark from the coil to the dist cap.

to the op. Instead of the wild goose chase.

hotwire the coil.. see if that changes anything.

if no spark still. put a test lamp in line with coil and battery.. crank over. lamp should blink.

if no lamp.. points are not closing ( gap wide? burnt? etc.. - if burnt.. check condensor with ohm meter to verify it is not open.. )

if lamp stays on, points are shorted ( closed up, shorted condensor..e tc. )

Took the weekend off will try the test tomorrow .I do have fire at the plugs but it is white not a good blue.

white and blue are good. orange and red are weak.

if you have good snappy white / blue spark at all plugs that will jump a max gap.. then start looking at fuel delivery, air flow and compression. won't hurt to check timing by book with a straight edge, just because.

Checked timing cleaned cap points etc got it started but not running well no fire now on number one cylinder tried new plug but no go .I guess I will order new cap roter points and plugs in morning don't think I need new coil because it fires well on three cylinders also tried different plug wire but still no fire on number one got me stumped

before you do all that.. pull the dizzy and rotate it in your hands.. have a battery and test lamp and some gator clip cables. clip battery to dizzy as ground, then clip other side of bat thru test lamp to concave screw.. spin dizzy by hand. observe operation.. bushing clearances.. etc.

looking for play inthe shaft bushings. can cause eratic spark due to changing spark gap

Took distributor out found retaining clip out of place thus breaker plate assembly loose causing shaft end play reassembled and now runs on all four but now have a miss might be bad a bad plug getting closer to running like before will keep working until it does

miss can be a plug or wire or even a hanging valve.

see if you can move the miss to other cyl with plug / wire swap.. or if it stays on 1 cyl.. do a comp test.

Finally running like before disassembled distributor cleaned new gaskets points rotor etc but main problem was retaining clip out of place throwing everything off don't know how it came out butit did had a miss and found a bad plug wire they don't make them like they did before only 1 year old. Thanks for all your input! Now on to my weak hydraulics

Can you still buy stranded copper plug wires?

Jim

yes.. tsc, napa.. etc.

some spendy places have pre made ones. otherwise 'roll yer own' cut to fit kits are easilly available.

Spring has arrived so on to new project I purchased a backhoe and plan to run it on my ford 2600 but no external hydraulics purchased a block that bolts on under seat for hydraulic supply for quick connects hopefully pump will supply enough oil should I have any big concerns not used to working on hydraulics
