Don't get to hung up on what the books show, I would get a dual tandem +30' that is rate 20k+. We have safely ran f350's with +18k on the trailer plus truck and trailer with a truck like yours you will be able haul anything short of a load you should put on a semi.

Soundguy,
I have a '99 550 auto 7.3 4x4 and a '05 550 auto 6.0 4x4 that I have had since new. These are good trucks for pulling a 5th wheel or gooseneck, one thing you have to watch with trailer selection is the weight of the trailer itself. I mean you can get a trailer that is so big and heavy that it reduces your payload capacity so much that you get in a catch22.

I pull my small tractor and backhoe with my service truck on a 12k bumperpull trailer most of the time. When I need to go farther and carry more than will fit on the service truck I also have a f350 diesel with a flatbed. I can load some implements on the truck first and then load the trailer.

At some point I may swap bodies and put the flatbed on the newer 550 as it is rated for 33,000 gcwr, then pull a 14k bumperpull trailer. I have a tandew 25GN trailer now that sits most of the time because it is so heavy. I think the truck and gn trailer empty are close to 13,000-14,000 lbs. Whereas I can use a F350 or F550 with a 14,000 lb bumperpull with 20' floor which weighs about 11,000 lbs empty, carry 11,000 lbs payload on the trailer for a total weight of 22,000 lbs. This means I can carry almost 4000 lbs on the flatbed truck and 11,000 lbs on the trailer and still be below 26,000 lbs.

Hope some of this helps you decide what to do.

FWIW, I have three 7.3's and two 6.0's, never put wrenches to the 7.3 motors but have replaced the shortblock in the newest 6.0 and worked on the other 6.0 too. None of these trucks have over 75,000 miles either.

hmm.. good info.. lots to think about.

so far.. I'm considering 24-30'

I hear what you guys are saying on the longer trailers.. ie.. easy to overload.. and hard to maneuver..

Don't short yourself on length, but just keep in mind that just like weight, length is a balancing act. Too short and you can't haul what you need, too long can mean a lot of difficulty in manuvering. Just take your time and find the right trailer for your needs.

I would 'like' a 30' I think my budget may limit me to a 25' though :)

short day at work tomorrow.. think I'm taking off after lunch and driving a couple hours north to a small equipment dealer I bought an antique plow from a few years ago.. they seem to have a selection of goosenecks for sale.

specifically an 8.5 x 32 20k, deckover with beavertail , dual tandems, both with brakes.. fold down spring assist ramps.. etc.

looking promising. better price than I've seen too.. otherwise the best thing I've seen is a 25' that I posted a pic of...

wish me luck guys

That 32' sounds like it would serve you well if the price is right and it's in good shape. Good Luck tomorrow!

Brand new, and I'm ok with the asking price. It's near 1000$ cheaper than i have seen locally, and if I expand that out to a 6hr drive, it's 800$ cheaper ( new units ).. and only 1000$ more than used ones i've seen.

I sent some emails to the delaer tonight.. and will call int he morning. assuming he has the unit in stock, and answeres yes to a few questions, at noon I'm heading up.

I just went out and double checked my NH 7610s and batwing.

7'6" wide and 28' long..thus the 32' trailer that is 8' wide with rail and stake pockets bringing it to 8.5' seems just about perfect.. not that I plan on trailering that beast often.. but if I need to I can.

otherwise, I bet I can fit 2-3 of my antiques on there pretty easy.

Sounds like you found your trailer. Don't know if anyone's mentioned it but if it's 102" wide that's better. Most of the flatdeck goosenecks will either be 96" or 102", better to get the 102" if possible. That extra 6" really can make a difference.
