Here's one more--it's part of the 1999 Ford RV and Trailer Towing Guide

http://changingears.com/Ford-1999-Towing-Guide-Partial.pdf

At the end of this excerpt you'll find info on the towing capacity of the 1999 Ford F450 chassis/cab. Looks like it's pretty similar to your 450 except you have the weight of the pickup bed added.

Your truck should have a 26,000# GVWR and it should weigh around 8,500# leaving you with 17,500# for towing in the real world. The 17,700# number is for just the cab and chassis, no bed, extra fuel tank, ect.

26k. nice..

been searching all over for gn's making my head hurt.

have found that 37k axles are cheaper than 2 10k.. in some cases much cheaper! like 1k$ cheaper..e tc.

There's a good reason for them being cheaper, they're not very popular. Lots of tire wear from turns, tires popping off rims, extra stress on axles. If you went straight all the time they'd work okay.

been doing hours of phone calling and internet shopping in a 1+ state range.

so far have found a 35' dual tandem 20kw used gn for 5700$ or so.. looks decent.. in florida.. brakes.. etc. that's looking promising.. as long as 35' ain't too long.. etc..

A 35' trailer would be okay, just have to be careful or you could overload it because you'll have room for more tractors. The longer the trailer the easier it is to put too much load on the truck. You could end up loading too much forward of the trailer axles and more on the rear of the truck. A shorter trailer will force you to load back toward the trailer axles. Just have to watch how you distribute the load.

At this point, I think your best bet might be to test tow some different lengths and get a feel for what will trailer well for you with the type of hauling you do. The longer the trailer, the more difficult it is to manuver in tight quarters and the more room you will need to make turns. As you are out and about, watch how different size semis set up for their turns and you will see what I am talking about. On long trailers you need to go further into the lanes you are turning into to keep the trailer from riding over the curb and/or hitting something on the sidewalk or to avoid objects on the right. The longer the trailer, the worse it becomes.

Again, take some trailers for a test tow and see what you think will work best for you.

PS: The longest load I've towed was a pole trailer stretched out to 45ft with an 80ft pole on it. I picked it up in downtown Seattle and had to haul it out to our shop about 40 miles away. That was a fun load to tow as when you turned you didn't just have the right side to worry about, but the 35ft of pole sticking off the end of the trailer swings the opposite direction when you turn and takes several lanes on the left as well. Granted, we flag the load and use escort vehicles, but it is still amazing how dumb some drivers are trying to get around the escort vehicles.
