I agree the 45' is too long. I had a 25' that was just right that had 25,000# gvwr. It was sitting on tandem duals.

Like the others said weigh your truck first then do the math. Say your truck has a 24,000# max gcvwr and the truck weighs 9,000 then you 15,000# to play with.

Same thing with a trailer. Say you get a 25,000# trailer like I had. It weighed 6,000# so it had a usable load of 19,000#.

so.. in essence.. still look for that 20k trailer.. just one more in the 29-33' range.. otherwise it looks like 14k is the next step.. IE.. 2 7k axles.. etc.

it lists up to the f550.. for the 450 it lists a manual and auto tranny.. but only lists the 5.4l and 6.8l, not the 7.3

still.. the 6.8l 450 w/ 4.88 rear has a gcwr of 24000#

trailer weight rating for a class iv hitch is 10k# with a listing for 5th wheel as gcwr-gvw

that looks good.. I thought I was stuck with a 17700 rating.


my thinking correct here?

17700 is the maximum load you can tow, trailer and cargo. 24000 is the maximum that the truck, trailer and load can weigh. You're still in good shape. My recommendation would be to buy a 30' dual wheel tandem with a dovetail and folding ramps. It's a good match for your truck and it'll carry any load you care to put on it.

I got ya.. 24k for the whole enchalade.. me, the old lady, the truck, the trailer and the tractor.. with it divided so that no more than 17700 can be aft of the truck following it down the road.. meaning the other 6300 would have to be truck and cargo.. which since it weighs more than that, the 17700 number will be reduced by the actual truck total weight.

got it now.

I'm going to look at another 30' tandem on monday and a 24' tandem.
