I found a Ford 1200 tractor, 4x4, 3 point, ROPS, and rear wheel weights for $500 on craigslist. The bad, it needs its tranny rebuilt. Would this be a good deal. Is it very expensive to have a tranny rebuilt? My budget is $1800. Comments welcome. This is a 16 hp tractor, would it be able to handle a box blade, grading blade, ect.? Basically my implements listed below. Is 16 hp enough?

Here are some prices on Ford 1200 tranny parts

Ford, 1200, Transmission, WITH ROSS STEERING GEAR, TRANSMISSION CASE, SBA322010520 at Wengers of Myerstown

Not as bad as I expected, pricewise. But I don't know if there are other parts not listed there than you'll need.

Fixing up old tractors into working condition can be pricy. I just had the engine rebuilt on the 1951 Minneapolis Moline BF tractor (27 hp 4-cyl Hercules IXB3SL gas engine) that cost me $1600 ($800 parts, $800 labor). I'll bet you spend all of that $1800 and more getting that old iron running.

That said, $500 for a non-running, fixable tractor is a good price. I paid $1300 for that BF in non-running condition. But it's a fairly rare tractor and the sheet metal is in exceptionally good condition--something you don't find on a lot of tractors that old.

I'd say go for it.

Jake,
I agree with flusher in that fixing up old tractors can be expensive. With Kubota, Kioti and maybe even John Deere doing 0% financing, have you considered buying a new small tractor ? With all the side jobs you do I know you could afford it. Something to consider.

Your 14! Take a shop/auto class and rebuild the tranny for a grade.

I know im 14 but im in a private school this year so there is sadly no shop class of any type. atleast im alowed to run the little lawn tractor to cut the grass there. Any way, I would get a new tractor but im not sure I could earn enough money to pay for a tractor each month. I showed the add to my grandpa who told me to see what it would cost to get the tranny rebuilt at my local NewHolland dealer. If it doesnt cost to much, i would offer the seller $300 for it and haul it to the dealer to get the tranny going. But who knows how much it would cost to get the tranny rebuilt. Thanks for all the advice Think about it, my L118 is lonely.

Tonight, im gonna talk to my mom about it since I really have 2 bank accounts with enough money to get it if I want it. Its got 3 speeds forward/reverse, 540 and 770 pto speeds, front weights, ROPS and seat belt. It is a 19hp tractor with 16hp at the PTO with a 3 cylinder engine and 4wd. Looking at the picture, I want to mount a fire extinguisher and a Quick hitch on the 3 point. Does anyone have this model of tractor that could state any problems they've had with this model tractor. Would this tractor be able to handle a loader? Of coure, i will take pictures for everyone if I get it.

I do not have a YM169D but I do have a YM186D and I love it. Last tractor I'll ever need (though I may get more). Never had a problem with it. I have never needed a part other then regular maintainence stuff. I would test drive it , make sure everything works and make them an offer. Mine it 18 hp. I would guess the 169 is 16. The 3 cylinder Yanmar is a smooth runner.

I saw 2 different 186D tractors but both were over my price range. Some time from thursday to saturday i will go see and hopefully purchase it. I looked on tractordata.com and found out that the 169D has 19 HP. I will take pictures. All I can think about is that little yanmar and what I will do with it first.

Well, my plan is to get it on friday. I have a series of things to inspect when i look it over and really want to buy it. I have been stairing at the picture of it for 5 days now, thats how bad i want it. The only thing that the owner said wasnt working was that one of the headlights was a little dim and he would fix it for me. I plan to get an imatch system, SMV sign, and a fire extinguisher for it as my first added things for it. I will take pictures.

It comes with a 40" brushhog. I have a boxblade, grader blade, harrow, and pallet forks waiting to put on it. They are all mine. :D I plan to bring the tractor home this weekend and use my grader blade to grade the driveway and maybe go show the neighbors my new toy. From what the guy has said about it, it is very well taken care of, never slept outside, and he used it to mow and cultivate inbetween rows of christmas trees so I am pretty sure it is coming home tomarrow. When i get it, i'll add it to my signiture and post pictures. It will be hard to sleep tonight. Now i just need to make room for it in the heated garage.

I am so happy! I am now the proud owner of a Yanmar 169D and a field mower. I drove it around, tested everything posible, and hauled it home. It got a welcome home by me greasing it and showing it off to my little cousins. It may be 40" wide now but I am going to widen it out to the widest setting for stability. i get to play with it all weekend with my grader blade and show it to the neighbors. I cant wait to do snow removal! :D I sure did impress the seller since i am 14 and wanted a tractor. I will upload some pictures soon!
