Cindi, I keep many loaded guns in the house but they are either locked up in instant access gun safes from GunVault or another semi-instant access safe I have. I bought my first MiniVault from them around 10 years ago. It had worked so well that I bought another safe, the MultiVault Deluxe, from them about 3 years ago. These two safes are designed for handguns but they do now have an instant access safe designed for a shotgun (their Long Gun Vault). It only fits the Remington 870 or the Mossberg 500 so it may not work for you but I believe there are other similar safes available from other companies. The "No-Eyes" keypad is great and has never failed me yet. Their Long Gun Vault could be mounted right on a wall in plain sight. You could keep the gun loaded and locked up safely. I would much rather press a few buttons and have instant access to a loaded firearm than to grab an unloaded gun, grab the ammo in another location, load the gun, bring it into position, and rack a round into the chamber while under stress.

I have attached an image showing a few of GunVaults products.

( My grandfather told me to never point a gun at someone unless I was prepared to use it )

I was taught the same thing; a good rule to follow, but there's always an exception to every rule. Example: One night I was alone and laid in wait for a pair of thieves. Without going into the whole story, when they showed up, I knew that as soon as they saw me they would break and run and no way I could catch both; would have been lucky to catch one. So I did point my weapon at them and told them in no uncertain terms that I would shoot them if they ran. A bluff, of course, because there was no way I was going to shoot a teenaged thief. Had they run, I knew I would be holstering my weapon and trying to catch one, but they didn't know that, so I scared them badly enough that they froze and I got both.

And GranDad was right. If you skin that smoke wagon you better to able to use it reliably and quickly otherwise you will have likely sealed your own fate and very possibly that of those around you. loaded guns locked and unloaded guns for defense /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Bird; I would have done the same but if the pests run I'd probably pop one in the diert by my feet. LOL. You can bet they would know I was serious as they were running. I Would be willing to bet that if one of them youngsters pulled a gun out of their pants Your grandad would have been right too! What you need to get for your brother is a 45-70 Marlin Converted by Wild West Guns in AK for bush Pilots. They are take down SS versions. A bit on the $$$ side though. Dave

I think a few of us must have had the same grand dad. Did any one else get one of those red rider BB guns !!

Do you mean everyone didn't get a Red Rider B.B. gun????? I thought all boys got one of those. If we had one now it would probably be worth some money.

Sure did. And I remember the first time my granddad caught me shooting it at my sister I couldn't sit down for a month!!

Bird certainly your situation is alot different than most of us. You were a trained law enforcement officer. That was your job.

A red ryder experience....NOT for the kids!

Some of the most fun I have had in years is bouncing BB's off a tin box hanging from a couple light chains, until wifey told me to stop or I'd have to paint the mailbox again. She was outside at the table when we were sighting in the boys new spring cocking .177 pellet gun last week, and saw me look around at the mailbox.....she read my mind and I "got it" just for looking.

Pete - I just related your story to my wife - I think both of them are cut from the same cloth. She hasn't even fired the .177 yet and isn't interested because it has to be manipulated so much between shots. She just wants to settle in and shoot.

Also, how do you like that 6.5? It's on the short list for upcoming purchase. We started looking at the Swiss 96 Mausers, but have strayed into Sako, Kimber, Steyr territory for a while - also looking at CZ's. The boys have both been given the rebates on the child tax credit, and they are experiencing serious 5 alarm pocket fires right now. Suddenly dreams can be had! 243's are everywhere, as are a number of other smaller caliber medium game rifles; they like odd balls (no wisecracks about how they got that way!). How's the trigger on that Mark II? Strangely, my oldest's other interest is the 336 in 35 Rem.

Parallel universe?

I rember my" Red Ryder" BB gun. Everthing was SAFE from it's lethal discharge. It was only when I got to use the .22 that sparrows and such were in danger. This really escallated when at age twelve I bought a Cooye bolt action .22 with 4 power scope with the proceeds from my weasel trapline. this later escalted to a winchester model 66 .22 .

My only regret is that in between I did not keep a French .22 that fired from an open bolt postion and just so happened to be misadjusted so it was auto fire. Couldn't afford the shells.
