A friend of mine who lives out of state has a 1998 F150 4wd, just like my 97. He called me the other day and said he thinks it is stuck in 4 high. I ran thru the items I was advised to do on here when I had the same issue with my 97, no change. The light on the dash is off but he thinks it is still in 4wd. I told him to jack up the front end, put the truck in park and try to spin a tire. To ensure I am correct, if it is not in 4wd, high or low, the front tires should be able to be turned by hand if trans is in park, correct? Also, wouldn't both tires want to turn, similar to posi-traction? Just want to make sure I am telling him right, do not have much 4wd experience.

If stuck in try tapping on the transfer case with a dead blow hammered. If this fixes it then the fluid needs changed asap. On later model Ford's the vacuum actuator valve is on the passenger firewall. It may need replaced. About a $30 part.

Chris

He did the hammer tap on the t-case. I will forward the vacuum actuator valve info to him now. Thanks.
