Those are some bright gloves! I used to wear the plain double palm Wells Lamont leather gloves, and still do on dirty jobs. Now I mostly use padded mechanic style gloves from Harbor Freight.

I've big hands and most inexpensive gloves don't fit. But the Wells Lamont in 1209XL fit and are sold by Costco at their stores in packs of three. I don't know what the price is now but I think they were well less than $15 for the 3 pack. I must have bought 20 pair over the last 10 years, and probable have 4 pair brand new. Like eyeglasses, measuring tapes, pencils and cutting implements I try to keep some scattered around so I don't have to look far. I handle a lot of wood and 1 deep splinter can ruin my day.

And from all those pairs I think only 2 pair have worn out.

I just wish Costco carried a larger size.

A discussion on gloves always reminds me of the old salesman who sold me our first Kubota. When I gave him directions for delivery, he said he was familiar with the area and had recently delivered a tractor to a nearby farmer. In his words - "Well, he called himself a farmer, but he was wearing gloves and it wasn't even cold outside".

The $5.99 black mechanics gloves from HF work for me. Thin enough to retain dexterity, can be stuffed in a back pocket, and not too warm in summer.

Calloused hands with black fingernails aren't pretty.

Basic yellow or gray thin leather gloves. Even fancy driving gloves will work fine to protect your skin. But for veryday use, most guys end up with a set of thin leather gloves from the sporting goods section of the hardware store.
Popular leathers are goat, pig, deer, and elk - sometimes the elk is a little too thick. Good ones cost more than you think. You want something thin that fits good so that you can "feel" through them. If made well, they can't be too thin because thin supple leather wears like iron. They give you lots of abrasion protection, some degree of cold weather protection, but the real key is that they are light enough to wear in the summertime.

When driving anything - tractors, motorcycles, truck, or cars - these thin leather gloves are the ones you want. Don't take my word for it, get several different kinds of gloves. See which pair you end up using. You only have one set of beautiful hands. Protect them.

Yellow chore gloves for me. I buy them by the 6-pack for for $7. They do just about everything for me except keep my fingers warm when I stop working. With heavy rough work like tree branches and storm damage I use deer skin gloves.

My go to gloves are the Hardy work gloves from HF. Bought the pair on the left for $4.99 on sale.

The Brine Lacrosse gloves on the right came from Academy Sports. I bought them for motorcycle riding but they aren't very comfortable so they get little use. They were mis-marked for 2 bucks or something like that so I couldn't resist giving them a try.

I feel naked if I don't have my gloves on when operating or working on machinery and working on fences. Those barbed wire fences will tear up you hands.

Calloused hands with black fingernails aren't pretty...not even on a guy!
And somewhat off topic but why is it in restaurants there's always some old guy in shorts and sandels, legs look like homemade axe handles and toenail fungus?

Barbed wire fences - that's one of the major reasons I wear my leather gloves.

Short story - when we came down from AK in '82 we were new to country living. Along with building our Panabode cedar home here - I also had to install a five strand barbed wire fence around the 80 acres. So - after some rough calculations - went in to the local Farm, feed & seed store - bought a big 'ol pallet of T-133 posts and two dozen rolls of barbed wire. The guy thought he was being helpful and said they were having a special on this particular brand/type of barbed wire. I said - sure - load it on. It took 32 rolls of wire and 574 T-133 posts for the entire job.

As soon as I started stringing the first roll of it I could see why it didn't sell well. Its double strand, four point and its called - EverSharp. Each of the four points was as sharp as a surgeons scalpel and, to this day, 36+ years later, each of the four points is still as sharp as a surgeons scalpel.

It cuts your hands - right thru leather gloves - it shreds your pants and God help your ankles if you aren't wearing something like Mucks.

So...... I gritted my teeth - got several pairs of heavy leather gloves and about fifteen months later - I had a brand new five strand barbed wire fence around the 80.

I'd get up before sunrise and work on our house until around 3pm. Knock off and rest for an hour - then work from 4pm til dark on the barbed wire fence.

Finished the house on the eighth of November - 1982 The fence went on into the summer of '83 before it was completed.

I think I went thru ten or twelve pair of leather gloves putting up that fence. It does require normal maintenance - but its still as strong and SHARP as the year I installed it.
