I'm going to get flamed for this but here goes. My employer's safety department came down with a hard and fast rule that EVERYBODY will wear gloves ALL the time while at work. They bought tons of gloves of all types and sizes and these bright plastic roach clip glove holders for your belt. They declared that this rule will ELIMINATE ALL hand injuries across the plant network. What a foolish joke.

Ever try installing a 4-40 button head screw while wearing ANY type of glove? Good luck with that! How about running a lathe, mill or stationary belt sander with gloves on?

I'm of the mindset that I don't need someone to protect me from myself, especially when it comes from some guy or gal sitting in an office whose sharpest tool is a pencil.

I don appropriate gloves for the task when my thoughts tell me that I might injure my hands. I don't have any callouses and my hands are smooth and tough like shark skin and nimble enough to start a tiny fastener in a hole that I can't even see.

Love my nitrile gloves for keeping my hands clean when working on dirty equipment.

No flaming here...completely agree. The safety culture going on is enough to make a man want to juggle flaming chainsaws. Every time I hear someone say "be safe" or "drive safe" I shake my head. And when people like that get put in authority to "help" you be safe....good Lord.

Look at the fifth bullet under Drill Presses:

Safeguarding Equipment and Protecting Employees from Amputations

About 10 years ago we were on a large project for a pharmaceutical firm. They had a 100 percent glove policy in effect. After demonstrating how gloves made it nearly impossible to do some of the finer work, they relented and allowed our supervisors some discretion determining when the guys could perform certain tasks without gloves. All was well till one of the carpenters on the project cut a finger. Back to gloves all the time.

When the safety team saw gloves simply wouldn't work in some cases, they said we could use gloves that exposed the thumb and first two fingers. Great! until we cut some gloves to expose thumb and fingers as described. Then we were guilty of modifying PPE. If we wanted to use gloves like that, they had to be manufactured that way. Someone in our purchasing department connected with a glove manufacturer who could help. The manufacturer's rep said "Oh, you must be working on a Merck project. Never heard of anyone else buying them".

For five years I worked for a company that made LARGE air handling units. There was a VERY STRICT company policy - - NO GLOVES or LOOSE CLOTHING of any type while using the large magnetic drills.

As you would expect - one of the young "kids" got his gloved hand wrapped up in a big 1" Milwaukee magnetic drill. Wrapped his hand up pretty good, backwards, around the drill chuck - the pain got so bad he quickly passed out.

HE WOKE RIGHT BACK UP WHEN HIS GOOD 'OL FRIEND DECIDED THE WAY TO GET HIM UNTANGLED - PUT THE DRILL IN REVERSE AND BUMP THE TRIGGER. It wrapped his hand and fingers up the other way faster than you can say jack sprat.

Good he had a glove on his hand - the three fingers that got ripped right off his hand were found in the fingers of the leather glove.

Well, i’ve Worked with my hands in various construction jobs ny entire life and frankly find gloves in most cases to be a first class PITA. Cold weather, welding and hot work, caustic chemicals, nasty sewer lines, and the like are notable exceptions. Yes, the paws get barked up and the callouses grow like bark on a tree but
I find wearing gloves for most tasks adds an element of clumsleynes to the job at hand.
Still wondering how one can grow a blister operating a back hoe? Shovel, ya I get that.

Still wondering how one can grow a blister operating a back hoe? Shovel, ya I get that.

My backhoe is a "four stick" instead of a joy-stick,,
When you manipulate all four sticks at the same time, you end up "palming" one of the sticks,,, a LOT!!

When I palm that stick, I get a blister between fingers 3 and 4,,,
I haven't run the backhoe since I started this thread,, and the blister is now just about healed,,, :cool2:

OK, got it
My machine is a two joy stick Cave Man simple to operate New Holland. No doubt a good thing given the
Advancing age of the operator.

Short story - when we came down from AK in '82 we were new to country living. Along with building our Panabode cedar home here - I also had to install a five strand barbed wire fence around the 80 acres. So - after some rough calculations - went in to the local Farm, feed & seed store - bought a big 'ol pallet of T-133 posts and two dozen rolls of barbed wire. The guy thought he was being helpful and said they were having a special on this particular brand/type of barbed wire. I said - sure - load it on. It took 32 rolls of wire and 574 T-133 posts for the entire job.

Why barbed wire? Do you have cattle?

My favorites are deerskin work gloves, and I usually have 2 pairs. I start with a new clean pair and try to use them for clean chores, taking them with me when loading lumber etc. As they get trashed they get rotated into the real workhorse gloves... dirty, oil and grease situations, firewood, etc. I've tried a lot of gloves, and deerskin are definitely my favorites.
