What a waste of good wood...... there was probably enough to keep the old wood stove going for a year or more. If you want to see something that is really impressive, watch one of the machines that grabs the tree and cuts it while holding the tree..... then it turns the tree and feeds the entire tree, limbs and all into a huge chipper that deposits the chips into a tractor trailer.... Seen them clear 40 acres in less than a week with that monster... I think that they use the chips to make chip board and wood pellets for pellet stoves.....

Yes...I keep thinking the same thing...

I salvaged all the chips that came from the trees on my property...guess they will compost over a few years... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The only wood I burn is in my fire pit...and I have more than enough of that already... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

But I can tell you there are a lot of trees turning into chips as they cut through the woods...

around here they just cut them into 3 or 4 foot lengths and leave them at the side of the road or where ever they were cut. I know that whenever people find out that there is free wood, it looks like a feeding frenzy of ants at a picnic.... I had my land logged a few years ago and anything that was left behind was quickly picked up by neighbors... they did ask and I said take all that you want.... They even carried away the but ends of the pine and hemlock for firewood... It cost about $ 125 - $140 a cord around here for cut and split hardwood...

Henro,
All that good wood going to chips.... Are you sure you don't want a wood stove? Although those chips will make great compost. I have worked a few piles since I got my tractor and have found that turning it periodically really speeds up the composting. It's a great excuse to get a little seat time with some easy loader work. Every time I have turned a pile, it seems to accelerate the process dramatically. I think ideally I could turn the piles every 2 or three weeks and it would be ready to use in about 6 months.

Thanks for the post, although it makes my equipment seem pretty insignificant.

around here there is a farm that composts goat and sheep dung and they turn the piles every 2 weeks... mix in some leaves in the fall and sell it for composted loam in the summer for $26 a yard.... great for growing vegetables so I am told.... I buy the "recycled" stuff off the farm fields for $8 a yard....

Pretty cool, I'd like to get a hold of the "truck" pulling the chipper, would be just the thing for a few projects I have in mind.

Wal Mart is building a new super center on 10 heavily wooded acres with some massive trees. They shredded everyting on the land and sold it to the nurseries for a profit.

They were done within a week. Heavy vegitation down to dirt. Now they are removing a hill consisting of millions of tons of dirt, working 7 days a week with brand new Catipiller equipment. WOW!

Probably a "non union" contractor on that Wal Mart job. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
