A very dumb question on Roosters

See below. The fence and the roosters and barrels were recently put up.

I've actually seen this a couple of times over the last 20 years in NC, and this by far is the nicest one I've seen set up.

Why the barrels and roosters tied to a lead?

I understand the potential of aggression with males roaming freely, but I'm kind of scratching my head on why someone would deal with the logistics of setting it up? I just can't see the financial gain for selling roosters, but perhaps I'm missing the boat. Is there money in selling roosters?

I've seen housing for fowl similar to that for decades on my trips through the south. Never stopped to ask why. But they always had low shelters.

That looks like it would be a mess if a strong wind came through and blew over the barrels.

When I was a knee high to Chihuahua someone left a fighting cock with my father.
He left a couple sacks of feed and gave Pa a $50 to just let him run with our free range chickens.
This rooster chased everything. We couldn't have our own rooster.
The German shepherds weren't immune or anything else.
He almost bought it when he jumped my father and scratched his back while Pa was bent over a water barrel rinsing himself off after a day in the field.
When the guy came in the fall he gave Pa a $100 for keeping Killer.
He wanted to do it the next year but Pa said no, once was enough.

Considering cock fighting in a felony in NC, I didn't give the notion much of an idea.

The more I read up on it, can't help but think it's a 50/50 bet its on cock fighting.

That said, not certain I'd build a fence and put all that crap up in my front yard for everyone to see driving by the road if I was thinking about making money doing something illegal.

Although I'm not a choir boy by any means (particularly in my youth), can honestly say I never made money illegally.

Guess the difference between roosters and dogs is you don't have to train the roosters...

Guess the simplest way to find out if anything illegal going on is to follow the money trail (along with shipping), if you actually wanted to spend your time on it.

Looking in my neck of the woods, I honestly don't see a return on investment for what it costs in shelter along with feed on what you can sell them for.

That's why I was wondering why someone would take a half way decent looking home and put a 100 roosters on their property along with barrels in their front yard.

Even at $100 per bird (on the high side locally from what I could find), after taxes and overhead, I just don't see the ROI.

I’m guessing if there is real money to be made fighting birds there is real money to be raising and growing birds to sell for that purpose. Think about horses.

What I was saying is it NOT illegal to sell a rooster bred to be large and mean to someone else who is planning to do illegal stuff with them.

That said, when it comes to guns and if you're the buyer, my suggestion would be to don't do anything stupid to advertise what you have that shows people you are breaking the law (and to most law abiding citizens who respect guns as tools, making the news killing others doesn't even cross your mind).

Approximate 30 years ago. near West Memphis Ark. a Sherriff received information about a cock fight on a farm and called several deputies with their cars to catch the people involved.
Driving the back roads with lights off to the location they sealed the doors and arrested those involved. including several birds. and a sack of cash for the bets.
the trunk of police cars and back seat full of sacked roosters and one deputy put the cash in his vehicle on the way to the local police station the one with money was forced off the road sack removed and it was explained to him to keep his mouth shut. He did for several years.
I never heard what happened to the Roosters.
one I knew involved had gas tossed on his body and lit he drove to Forrest City and died on the way to hospital.

Though it is illegal to cock fight in many states, they drive them to states where it is either legal or there is enough corruption that they don't enforce the laws. It is not illegal to raise them and yes, there is money in it.

My neighbor, several years ago (20+), had them in his back yard. He asked me if I wanted to go to a cock fight with him down in KY. It was a 3+ hour drive and I declined.

He told me that it would surprise me how many people, including people in positions of authority and law enforcement were involve with it.
