Sometimes you can do that and have a job. When I retired, we spent about 6 years in an RV, sometimes just traveling to visit friends and relatives, sometimes just to see things we hadn't seen, but then we both worked in Virginia one summer, I worked in Alaska one summer, and I worked a job for 2 years that had me traveling far and wide; did little jobs in GA, NY, PA, OH, LA, VA, TN, TX, NM, and AZ.

AARP reaches a lot of people. That's why their ad rates are high. I've got no problems with that. They are deeply into politics, no problem with that either. But I don't agree with their politics so I won't join and won't give them money and don't see their ads since I won't read the magazine. I'm not saying its bad for anyone else to be members, even if they too disagree with AARP politics. However, as a general rule I do think it best that we know how our money is being used and make choices about how we spend it or give it away. You can't do it with everything, but being informed is important.

AARP is very much for big, highly socialized, highly taxed based government. They are a significant force in that direction due to their numbers and the people they can reach (same as with advertising.) That clearly aligns them with one party over the other (although it is getting hard to tell the two parties apart these days when it comes to spending, big government and socialism.

In any case, the primary point I'm trying to make is that it is good for us to know where our money goes. In fact, in a culture and society where the economy of consumerism is the defining principle that guides all things including our morals, how we spend our money, and who we give it too, is probably more important than how we vote!

OK, but personally, I get a lot more advertisements from credit card companies wanting to give me another credit card, from insurance agents wanting to sell me insurance, and from car dealers wanting to sell me another car. Junk mail is junk mail, as far as I'm concerned; doesn't really matter who sent it. But I don't really consider it much of a problem, since I have a good paper shredder.

thingy, I kind of agree with your analogy. Not to worry too much for I have a crystal ball. I see in the future that some big Chinese conglomerate will take over Wal Mart. Everyone will be working for them cause everyone demands cheap stuff and that's the only job in town. Don't worry about retirement cause they'll hire the retirement aged people as door greeters. AARP will lower their sign up age to 40 cause all the door greeters can't afford the dues.

The future,,yeah that could be scary,,but on the other hand,maybe not.
Seems like you have to be pretty low when the future looks much better,,if your not ,it generally looks worse,so,we ain't hit bottom yet by a long site. Bet during the depression,,every body was looking towards the future and thinking it would be better,and they was right.

Junk mail! Don't get me started. We have all these discussions about polluting, global warming, environmentalism, etc etc. Well, when it comes to junk mail I'm right in there with the most liberal, pinko, enviromental extremists you can find! But the reason is because I am conservative. And for people like me, being conservative has nothing to do with voting Republican or listening to Rush Limbaugh. It is a personality thing. I hate waste. And more than that, I hate waste that destroys. And junk mail is the worst. Think of all the trees it takes to make it and all the fossil fuel it takes to deliver it and virtually No One wants it and yet the is virtually no way to keep it from coming to you. And I don't get just a piece here and there, my mailbox is literally FULL of it, everyday.

I better stop now or my head is going to explode!

George, besides the environmental conservative aspect, I used to be a mail carrier (49 & 50 years ago) and a postal clerk (43 to 48 years ago), and it always annoyed me that, as individuals, we have to pay first class postal rates while they send all that junk through the mail much, much cheaper. I don't mind them advertising; just think they should pay the same postal rates that you and I pay. Of course that would slow down a lot of the junk mail.

I have not seen anyone ranting. What I see is many people expressing their thoughts regarding issues which they feel are important.
