acetone increases mileage?

   / acetone increases mileage? #41
I just finished a one-tankful test in my Toyota Tacoma. It made exactly zero difference, as I suspected. I used a ratio of 1000:1 which is on the low side of what is supposed to work, but I don't think I'll bother trying different ratios. I doubt it will make any difference.

See my post a bit earlier in this thread regarding the effect it seems to have in my old Farmall M tractor. I put in a few more posts with it today and it's still running like a champ, so I do believe there is some cleaning effect with the acetone. That is most likely why some people see a mileage increase, but they might have gotten the same effect by running a tank or two of decent fuel system cleaner through.

Anyone remember "the pill" from the 1970's? It was a little metal pill about the size of an aspirin and was supposed to increase your gas mileage about 15%.

I put it in my VW Beetle and the gas mileage "went down", so did the performance (what little it had).

While the theory that it cleaned a sensor is plausible /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif(Mythbuster refference), remember that the check engine light will go off after a two complete drive cycles with no fault present. If it was due to an intermitant fault, it could have take you several weeks to complete your drive cycles(not as easy as it sounds).

The reason I bring this up is that my gut feeling is you still have a problem that should be addressed. Its more likely that there was a coincidence rather than a cleaning of a sensor. I feel the O2 sensors would be more likely to suffer dammage than cleaning from the acetone.

If you dont have the resources to check it, stop into AutoZone sometime. DONT let them fix it or try to sell you anything. But they can pull codes to let you know what is there, there will likely be codes w/o the light.

About having anyone pulling your codes...ALWAYS ask if there is a charge FIRST. Sometimes they, anyplace, can change policies and you get hit for $50 bucks or more. Have heard of places charging $100.

Anyone in my area is welcome to stop by and I'll scan your codes for free. PM me first though.

Hadn't thought about Acetone as a engine/fuel cleaner but it is a petroleum distillate. Isn't think that about all the more info you get on a bottle of fuel treatment, contains petroleum distillates? Haven't read one in a while.

Anyway, glad to hear someone has obtained some real benefit from the acetone in the Farmall treatment. The next time someone brings up oil fouling their plugs we can all jump in on an answer. So in the end this really was a beneficial thread to mankind /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Does anybody have anything to report on their testing? I was hoping to see more more posts with miraculous results /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Has anyone tried using toulene or xylene additives to boost gasoline mileage?

Gasoline is comprised of mostly aromatic hydrocarbons as opposed to diesel fuel being primarily straight chain paraffins.

If you can purchase paint thinners for less than the price of gas it could save a few cents, but don't sniff it if you want to save a couple of billion neurons! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

we have used toluene in our race car, so much so that it is now illegal to use it and they test for it, it did make a difference to our lap times

Toulene is methyl-benzene with various subsituted methyl groups around the aromatic ring, it has a little more BTU energy than just straight benzene.

Xylene is di-methyl benzene with various isomers subsituted around the benzene ring. It has a little more BTU energy than toulene does.

Both have very distinctive smells and the human nose can easily tell them apart @ a 10 billionths concentration. Both also cause immediate and irreversible nerve damage to the central nervous system too, so it pays NOT to sniff them.
The reason they both burn so hot and dirty are the three double bonded ring carbons.

Basically, both Toulene and Xylene have extremely high octane ratings of around 120 to 130 octane, which is great for a gasser.

Conversly, both Toulene and Xylene have cetane ratings of around 15-20, which is horrible for a diesel engine.

Aromatic rings are generally high in octane and low in cetane, thereby making them great for gassers and bad for diesels.
