acetone increases mileage?

Makes me think of the Mythbusters show when they used dynamite to blast loose cement. Than used an obscene amount of explosives and disintegrated the whole truck...LOL!

Hi Guys,
I don't have a medical degree nor did I sleep at Holiday Inn Express last night, but I have always heard that acetone that comes in contact with your skin will migrate right through to your blood stream, and enough of it will cause liver damage. So it might be in your best interests to wear protective gloves and maybe a face sheild when handling pure acetone. I've used it for years for cleaning and removing all kinds of nasty gooey crud, and I have a healthy respect for it.

If however someone knows that it dosen't cause any health risks, please let us know.

Be safe! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

PS. I didn't read the article, so if they mentioned that, please excuse my laziness. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

( Nope, acetone has even less BTU's per unit volume than ethanol..... pure BS, although it does work great from removing the paint from your vehicle. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif )

Not only that, but toxic fumes, and only god knows what is generated and put out of the tailpipe from it. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I think the toxicity of acetone may be a bit exaggerated. After all, nail polish remover is mostly acetone and millions of women (and maybe men /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif ) use it every day. I did a quick search for nail polish remover ingredients and found a link with the following info regarding acetone:

Government & Industry Toxicity Category Explanation

UNECE R11: Highly flammable. [UNECE, 2004; EU Directive 67/548/EEC]

UNECE R36: Irritating to eyes. [UNECE, 2004; EU Directive 67/548/EEC]

UNECE R66: Repeated exposure may cause skin dryness or cracking. [UNECE, 2004; EU Directive 67/548/EEC]

UNECE R67: Vapours may cause drowsiness and dizziness. [UNECE, 2004; EU Directive 67/548/EEC]

Obviously you shouldn't drink it or bathe in it, but I don't think I'd worry about a bit of casual contact. To each his own, however, and I certainly wouldn't discourage anyone from using additional precautions ...

Yep acetone is in nail remover. I had a disagreement with a lady sitting next to me on a plane once doing her nails, the fumes were pretty bad. I nicely asked her to put it away, she got all heated up. So I called the flight attendant and she took up for the woman. I asked the flight attendant why she did not know her job. Got a blank look from her. I explained that ALL flamable fluids were banned from an airplane cabin and if she did not make the woman quit I was reporting them both to the FFA upon landing. the nail polish remover went away. And I was the devil incarnate to the offended woman /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ben
Isn't Acetone also used in meth drug production ?

I tried acetone in our 03 Escape, 2 tankfuls in a row. Got the identical mileage the first time and actually about 1 mile per gallon less the second time. Not enough difference to be conclusive. From reading different threads across multiple forums it does seem to be more beneficial to older engines; likely due (as stated in this thread) to carbon and other deposits getting cleaned off by the acetone. Some have claimed 30 or 35% increase in mileage, that may be a bit hard to achieve, at least based on what I'm seeing. The basic formula is to be 2oz acetone per 10 gal of diesel or 3oz of acetone to 10 gal RUG. Some posters have said they used that for a starting point and while keeping records adjusted their mix to find the most efficient blend for their specific vehicle. If it works for some, great. I'll try it in my F150 and see what happens. I don't fear doing any damage at the rates this calls for. Some were excited that acetone will eat seals and o-rings, etc but with 3oz to 1280oz (10 gal) of RUG that's no big deal (IMO)

I tried it in my 99 Nissan truck. The "service engine light" had been on for about 5 weeks. Hadn't seen any drop in milage since the light came on. Ran one tank with the 100% acetone added. Saw 1 mpg more with it. The service engine light went off after 3/4 of that tank went through. Hasn't come back on in the next two tanks of gas. Perhaps it cleaned a sensor.
