Your welding teacher will set you up to make a "Drift Pin", lol. I am sure there is a lathe close by.

Sadly I didn't think of it and the course is over. I may get in touch to find out where to get a used "drift pin" though. The welding shop has spud wrenches which are just drift pins with a fixed or adjustable wrench at one end but you'd think they were made of precious metal given the price.

Island can you post some pics of the Mods you made? I'm about to tackle 8 32" oak stumps here in rocky NE and I've been kicking around the idea of getting MI to build me one of these rippers. But if I can get the mods made at MI while there building it I'll be ahead of the game.

I saw some at $26 when searching the image but they were small and not the pin wrench deal. I am sure if you dropped in on the teacher that he would help you out part of being a teacher is to facilitate and they appreciate ex students dropping by makes them look good to the next batch, lol.

I saw that. The shipping weight is only two pounds and it doesn't specify the max diameter of the tapered handle. Just looking at the wrench part which they say opens 1.5 inches, that is much bigger than the handle. My main bucket pin is 1.25 inches as I recall so I'd need something about 1.5 inches max at the handle in order to line things up properly. That is probably why these things are so expensive.

Good advice. Thanks, I'll follow up with "Mr Ryan".

I haven't had a chance to remount the ripper to try out the modifications but here are a couple of phone camera shots so you can see what I did. The welds are atrocious looking but big enough that the "hooks" should stay on. The basic goal is to take a chunk out of any root that is too big to be broken on the first pass of the ripper.

Removed some birch trees Thursday and used my BH80x to take out a couple of stumps yesterday and was talking to my cousin about your ripper, lol. Took a couple of hours for the one stump, lol. Your mods look good and remember to be grateful:thumbsup:

Thanks Island for the kind words. Glad we had the opportunity to help get you fixed up with the ripper. We think your idea for the backbone plate was novel, and turned out to be effective in ways we didn't think about when you had us add it. It has both structural and various application advantages.

MIE: Could you weld the ripper tooth to a skid steer quick attach plate so I could use the tooth on my loader? (don't have a BH)

I envision driving up to a tree, pushing the tooth into the ground under the tree (for smaller trees) & popping the tree straight up out of the ground. For larger trees, do the same thing, but under the roots to the sides of the trunk.

With its rounded shape I think I could lower the loader while rolling back the bucket for maximum breakout/ pop-out power.

Can it be done?? What would the cost be?

Im sure we can get you a ripper fabricated on a Skid Steer Plate, please P.M. so we can discuss further and get you some pricing.
